Super king bedding problems!

Sotired22 · 06/01/2024 19:34

Upgraded to a super king bed and the bedding is driving me mad! I’ve got a super king duvet from M&S and 2 sets of bedding both from different shops. Both duvet covers are too big for the duvet. It’s impossible to keep the corners of the duvet in place and it all ends up bunched up inside the cover with loads of spare fabric on the sides. Why?!!

If it was just a set from one shop I’d assume it was that shop making it too big, but it’s both sets from different places. Do I need to buy one from M&S as the duvet is from there? Shouldn’t it all be universal sizes though? Never had this issue with king size or single bedding from various shops.

Has anyone else had this issue?

My duvet now has arrows in sharpie with this way written on it. Considering only I change it, the arrows would have been sufficient. However, after putting it in sideways, realizing, taking it out and putting it in sideways again, I had lost my shit.

Wr have a super king size and never had issues with bedding. The lines need to be horizontal not vertical!

We have got a superking- and change the duvet with a 'you tube' rolling method, which is a total game changer for the bed change- once you have mastered it. But because it involves laying the duvet out on the bed in place, then the inside out duvet over the top to roll, so you will know with that method that you have got it the right way round!

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/01/2024 22:31

Horizontal lines on our super-king duvet too, and also a member of the 'initially did it wrong and couldn't figure it out' club.

JingleSnowmanTree · 07/01/2024 22:55

What I don't understand is that if they're rectangular, and you put it in the wrong way, how are you getting it flat when it's too wide that way?

Previousreligion · 07/01/2024 22:56

Part of the club here too. I did realise that the duvet wasn't square, but not that the wide side should go across the bed rather than down it. Somehow didn't twig that a super king bed is wider than it is long, unlike my previous singles and doubles.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/01/2024 22:59

I'm just going to leave this here.....

You can thank me later Smile

LeanIntoChaos · 07/01/2024 23:00

It's only just rectangular, so the extra couple of inches one way, just rolls over slightly and you have an extra couple of inches of bedding the other way. It looks like it would be ok ..... But it is actually so very far from ok

emsyj37 · 06/01/2024 19:37

I don't want to suggest that you are stupid, so apologies if this doesn't help but - you do know that a super king duvet is rectangular?? So if you don't have it the right way round, it will not fit the cover properly.

This. ^^
You have to check you're putting the duvet into the cover the right way. The longest side goes across the bed, not head to foot.

We just use 2 singles with a throw, far easier!

We do too!

TinaYouFatLard · 07/01/2024 23:03

Yeah, youre putting it in sideways. My duvet has squares stitched in it and I know it's 8 squares across and only 7 squares down!

ichundich · 07/01/2024 23:22

I have super king size bedding from Dunelm that is too big for my super king duvet. John Lewis bedding fits perfectly.

CatSighs · 07/01/2024 23:25

We have the same problem, OP, and I am definitely not putting the duvet in sideways. I know that the longer edge goes across the bed. Our duvet is from John Lewis, but is nearly twenty years old. Our bedding is also JL, but is much newer. In recent years, I've found that the duvet seems too small for the cover and slips down inside, leaving us clutching at empty duvet cover around our shoulders.

Whether superking bedding sizes have increased since we bought the duvet or whether I've shrunk the duvet by washing it, I'm not sure, but it's very annoying.

I've just washed our bedding on a boil wash in an attempt to shrink it to fit the duvet, so we will see if that helps.

Hatty65 · 07/01/2024 23:26

I am mortified! I have had a superking bed (and duvet) since 1992.

I have just had a lightbulb moment reading this thread, got out of bed, taken the sodding duvet off and put in back in the cover so that the lines are horizontal ...and it fits properly. For the first time ever. I just thought me and duvet covers were not compatible.

I cannot believe that I have not realised in 32 years that my duvet is the wrong way round. I have always just assumed that the lines run vertically down the bed.

We had exactly the same issue. Several different brands of covers and two super king duvets.

I've measured both in a rage and the covers are bigger than the duvets. We ended up using poppers to keep them in place but it's a pain.

Flora73 · 07/01/2024 23:34

Slightly off-topic, what size pillows does everyone use? I have king-size pillows but not many shops seem to sell that size pillowcase John Lewis for example, all the sets only offer standard size cases.

2 x standard pillows look silly at the top of the bed. Do I use 3? Do I look further afield for nice bedding that has the option of king size pillow cases?

Hatty65 · 07/01/2024 23:43

@Flora73 I have three pillows across the bed (actually 6, because I like 2 pillows rather than 1). That way there are pillows all the way across the headboard if that makes sense?

I agree that two pillows looks a bit silly. However, I am a woman who has only just realised she has her duvet the wrong way round, so maybe not the best judge on this! 😁

Icalledmywheelchairdoris · 07/01/2024 23:47

Stripes go horizontal on my baavet as well.
I also use hotel bedding for it. They usually have holes in the top corner to stick your hands through and grab the duvet. However the duvet is too heavy for me anyway and DH has to change it.

As for pillows- lots. The more the better as far as I am concerned

That makes perfect sense! At least that way you have access to more lovely bedding.

I was about to say this. It's much better to have your own duvet to roll round in but a "unifying" cover on top, also for presentation

Oppositioblue · 08/01/2024 06:42

As with others, it’s possibly the wrong way round. I got a sharpie and drew on the corners so I know, with ease what way round is correct. That said, I think we are going to try 2 single duvets in the summer months

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/01/2024 08:29

Our superking quilt has the labels on the side. Definitely sounds like the quilt is the wrong way around.

MySlipperAddiction · 08/01/2024 08:40

This thread made me laugh as every time we get new fitted sheets I write on the bloody label where this label goes ie Dh's side of the bed or top/bottom etc.

@Sotired22 Have you changed it round yet?

Excitingnewusername · 08/01/2024 08:43

I also had several weeks of frustration at the fact that all my new superking duvet covers were too big for my new superking duvet.

A Mumsnet search informed me of the stripes go horizontal fact, and that was that problem instantly sorted.

(I also wish I'd realised how bloody hard it is to change a superking duvet, but now I just imagine it's a deliberate arms day free workout)
