Nepmarthiturn · 06/01/2024 18:58

This is a thread for autistic women to connect, chat, vent, laugh, share and seek advice and solidarity (small talk and word mincing not required). 😊

Any autistic women newly finding the thread are very welcome to join us (even if awaiting diagnosis) but we'd be grateful if others could leave us alone please…

Welcome to the new people and happy Easter Easter Smile

TheShellBeach · 31/03/2024 16:42

Happy Easter @JewelleryCat and everyone else!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 31/03/2024 16:48

Happy Easter, everyone!

I'm just about to deliver a box of roast lamb dinner and trimmings to my Mum and Dad, and then I'm going to chill out. The sun has been shining here which makes a change from the rain.

Enjoy the rest of the BH weekend, all.

Oh, and I'm another 'arm or leg in air' person. Mainly arms, I think.

Other things I do which may be linked:

Have to eat all foods separately- yes peas you can be on the same plate but you will be eaten first, then the meat then the carbs

If you're a burger you have a high cache of being disassembled- same thing if you are a sandwich

Hot cross buns I'll just pick out the raisins

I don't mind the raisins, but I object seriously to the candied peel.

The texture of it is awful. It ruins Christmas Pudding, too.

Yes, I'm really weird with foods, and so is DD.

I've never eaten a burger in my life though as I can't get meat not being in its original state (minced etc) texturally, I can't deal with it.

This is where i doubt my diagnosis at times cos i will eat almost anything.

Please don’t doubt your diagnosis because some of us can’t cope with certain textures with food and you can eat almost anything. It isn’t one size fits all if you see what I mean with autism

Agree. The sensory side is possibly the one I score highest on, but obviously there are so many other factors.

I found it really helpful actually to complete an Autism wheel (I can't remember what it's actually called - a spike profile maybe - I did it on an awareness course for parents when DD was first diagnosed)

Some people might 'score' really highly in one or two key areas, other may score lower, but in more areas.

I eat practically anything, too.

One of my three autistic children has ARFID though. Another only likes beige food, and the third is a vegan.

TheShellBeach · 01/04/2024 14:28

And as Jewellery and Rainbow say, there's no one-size-fits-all for autism.

JewelleryCat · 03/04/2024 14:22

What do people think of this term, neurospicy? I’ve just found out about it by reading another thread which had that term in it. I googled to find out what it meant and google says this

”You may have come across this new word or neologism that's gaining popularity online. 'Neurospicy' is a new internet term for neurodivergence. It's a fun and quirky phrase that the neurodivergent community is using to describe their neurodivergence”

Is it fun and quirky to say neurospicy instead of neurodivergence?

NO!!!

Hmm
RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/04/2024 15:53

TheShellBeach · 03/04/2024 15:38

NO!!!

Hmm

NO is also my answer.

I think it does nowt to help our 'cause' as we already seem to piss most people off simply by existing. Making up and taking on 'fun new words' just makes everything 100 times worse.

I can understand why some people might use the term. But for me and my daughter it just seems like another excuse for folk to roll their eyes at us.

Exactly this!
It's bad enough getting people who say "we're all a little bit autistic" without adopting a silly buzzword.

Argh.
Hmm

JewelleryCat · 03/04/2024 16:41

Oh I agree. I don’t understand why people would use the term anyway. There’s nothing wrong with neurodivergence as a term imo and spicy implies fire to me like fiery and I don’t know about you guys but I’m certainly not fiery lol

TheShellBeach · 03/04/2024 17:14

My temper can be spicy sometimes.

toffee1000 · 03/04/2024 17:36

I don’t really get what “neurospicy” means. It just sounds a bit stupid IMO.

Yep, really stupid.

With you on that one. It's like being autistic is some really cool & trendy thing, and quite frankly it's not. I feel like telling people who use it to fuck off - that's probably me being perimenopausespicy though.

JewelleryCat · 03/04/2024 18:08

I didn’t mean to start anything, I was just wondering if you all heard the term or if it was one of these new trends that seem to be around

Don't worry. I certainly haven't taken offence with you saying you'd come across the term. I totally value your input here, and it's always good to discuss what's 'out there'. Good and bad x

I’d never heard of it before today and I just wanted to know the opinions on here that’s all with us all being autistic

hendoop · 03/04/2024 19:21

See I don't mind it at all but that's probably because I am late to the diagnosis and have always been treated as mentally ill and been terrified I was a psychopath or any other personality disorder growing up as I felt so "alien"

So i feel it kinda of sums me up in a fun was as I have adhd and autism so i am a mixture and also it's such a spectrum it feels more fluid if you get me?

However, also understand if it gives others the rage as we have all had a long journey in general to get to where we are and different experiences which could lead different oppinons
