Cheddar cheese

Can anyone recommend a good mature or extra mature cheddar available in supermarkets that is actually good for grilling? Sick of my cheese on toast not being bubbly and golden. Too much supermarket cheddar seems to have lost the ability to grill well, or even melt well sometimes. It just sits there going slightly melty but looking sulky and lumpen, and refusing to go to golden bubbly toasty loveliness.

Not cathedral city.

Can you get hold of some wooky hole cheddar or finest cheddar actually made in cheddar? That's usually good.

Davidsons

Lidl cheddar melts well.

DelilahBucket · 06/01/2024 18:46

Ocado cheddar is very good for melting and going a lovely golden colour.

Coastal cheddar is nice as it comes and grilled too. We get it delivered from Milk and More, but you can buy it in Costco too.

Talipesmum · 06/01/2024 19:06

yes, davidstow is good.

Well Cornish cruncher from marks if you have the spends 😂

GaroTheMushroom · 06/01/2024 19:14

Agree not cathedral city. Tried to make Mac and cheese with this and it didn’t melt just went all hard and weird

MrsQTip · 06/01/2024 19:24

Not cheddar, but Comte melts beautifully.

Asda extra mature (purple packet) is great.

Mossstitch · 06/01/2024 19:29

I've just had some, it bubbled and browned under the grill......Aldi's in the green packet ( medium) or in the dark red packet if you like it stronger😋

Galloway

Tesco Extra Mature.

I'd agree with @MadamVastra M&S 3 year matured Cornish Cruncher. It's like cheese used to taste. Spendy though. 🧀

I find Red Leicester cheese better for 'cheese on toast'.
Melts well and goes all bubbly under the grill .. maybe give it a try.
Morrisons (my own choice) Red Leicester is quite nice and tasty.

thenightsky · 06/01/2024 20:19

Colliers - if you can find it. It seems to have disappeared from supermarkets this last year.

Tickler is ok.

unvillage · 06/01/2024 20:38

I like Pilgrim's Choice for something easily available.

Splendidsunbird · 07/01/2024 11:55

Thanks, I'll look into these. I usually shop at Morrisons and their extra mature cheddar had been decent until lately. I the tried cathedral city which was disappointing. I'll try the pilgrims choice. I buy 'nice' cheddar for cheese board eating but can't afford pricey cheddar for everyday cooking.
