Opened someone else's parcel

I'm worried!

I took a parcel in back in November for someone around the corner. I knocked twice back after it was delivered and never got an answer. It was thrown to the side and just totally forgotten about.

I've been away the last few days and came home to parcels to open. This one was at the bottom of the pile my husband past to me and I just opened everything. I opened this one and instantly knew it wasn't my order. I then looked and realised it was my neighbour(ish)'s.

I just went round again and could hear them in the house shouting at the dog and the lights were on but still no answer. What do I do?!

I'm worried about leaving a note. "Hi I opened your parcel" written down isn't the same as explaining in person...

You go “fuck it, they don’t give a shit about their parcel so why should I”.

NorthCliffs · 05/01/2024 21:16

Knock-a-door run, obviously. Poor dog.

Coffeespill · 05/01/2024 21:17

Why on earth are you worried? What's in the parcel?

EmpressSoleil · 05/01/2024 21:17

My house is divided into 2 flats. Both our families order way more from amazon than we should! Often bring each others parcels in. A couple of times I didn't have my glasses on, was expecting something, opened it and realised it was for the neighbour.

I just put it by their door with a note saying sorry, opened by mistake. Never been an issue.

alcohole · 05/01/2024 21:17

Um. Firstly they probably got a refund of the parcel contents already as it’s been 2 months, and secondly - you heard they are at home so you could have just left it on the doorstep. Or disposed of it. No need to hang onto it indefinitely

premiur · 05/01/2024 21:18

I wouldn't give it a second thought. In fact I would have binned it by now. My house isn't for storing people's shit for months on end.

itsmyp4rty · 05/01/2024 21:18

Just leave it on their doorstep.

Coffeespill · 05/01/2024 21:20

If you want write "opened in error" on it and dump it outside their house

SellingTw · 05/01/2024 21:23

Not worried about the contents, it's very innocent and contains gift sets which I presume were meant to be for Christmas...

More so worried just because I don't want them thinking I've purposely opened their stuff

I did this recently.

Remove the bit of tape you opened and replace it. Preferably with parcel tape as it covers all else!!

What makes you think they are going to come looking for it if they haven't don't in the past 2 months?

Forget about it

SnowsFalling · 06/01/2024 07:43

They obviously aren't bothered after 2 months.
Bin the box. Use or donate the contents.

StarlightLady · 06/01/2024 08:27

I would just explain what happened. If they won’t open the door, leave on doorstep with a note.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 06/01/2024 08:28

Unless it’s the local Don Corleone just tape it up and put on doorstep
