Loved him in Starsky and Hutch. Shame his life all went pear shaped.

Peridot1 · 05/01/2024 15:03

Oh no. Loved him.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2024 15:04

Aww - used to love Starsky & Hutch (and Silver Lady!)

Falkenburg · 05/01/2024 15:07

He had a singing career and an acting career in films but he is remembered by many foe the wonderful Starsky and Hutch!

First record I ever bought was Don’t Give up on us Baby ( the B side was Black Bean Soup 🤣). I was 12, it cost me 70p in Woolworths in Oxford.
Loved him.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2024 15:14

Got to love Don't Give Up on Us for the epic key change at the end - "don't GIIIIIVE up on us baby"

Uricon2 · 05/01/2024 15:15

First poster ever put on my wall (aged 12), Don't Give Up On Us first single I ever bought. He was so lovely looking back then.

My best friend preferred Paul Michael Glaser and there were heated debates about their respective merits!

RIP David.

Somehow I know all the words to Black Bean Soup and it is a really loud earworm 😁

I thought he was a wife beater. I thought I'd read it years ago.

Darklane · 05/01/2024 15:21

I remember seeing him several years ago, when he was much older than in Starsky, live at a theatre in Manchester playing the lead in Mack & Mabel, the musical. He was really good & still very attractive.

NashvilleQueen · 05/01/2024 15:21

I love the song Silver Lady. Actually love it.

LenaLamont · 05/01/2024 15:22

That was my cousin's favourite single, she played it to me endlessly when I was tiny. RIP to both her and David Soul.

He was! While she was heavily pregnant

Tootytoot78 · 05/01/2024 15:26

When he was first starting out in 'showbiz' he appeared on American entertainment shows, wearing a paper bag over his head as he sang. I think he was billed as The Mystery Singer, so in fact he was a precursor to The Masked Singer 50 years later!

And he was great in Salems Lot.

Falkenburg · 05/01/2024 15:29

When someone like him does it isn't just about them but the remembering of a past era that brings back wonderful and happy memories. The 1970s were a wondrous time for me of happy sunny days in summer and TV and films were wonderfully entertaining back then.

I loved Starsky and Hutch, even knitted a Starsky cardigan. RIP David.

Motnight · 05/01/2024 15:40

I adored David Soul until he was charged with assaulting his heavily pregnant wife.

Somehow I know all the words to Black Bean Soup and it is a really loud earworm 😁

I once was in a work meeting where one of the older blokes was banging on about how good he was at pop quizzes and was banging on and snorting about Don't Give Up On Us and I asked him what the b side was and he didn't know, so I told him it was Black Bean Soup and he was mortified at being ousted from self-identified team king of music by a mere middle aged woman.

Yesididntdothat · 05/01/2024 15:47

Obviously the assault he was convicted of in the 80s shattered his reputation. According to the BBC he gave talks to prisoners about domestic abuse (later on) and had several other wives and children. He was an alcoholic at that time (presumably always was).
I'm not condoning that behaviour at all in saying I still loved his work and he served his time.
