Mice!

We have found evidence of mice, and noticed that they have chewed some electrical cable. We have had an electrician in, and they are going to fix the wiring, but what is the best way to fix the mice issue?
We live in an old property, and next door (semi detached) is quite run down. We are not going to be able to completely mouse proof the house, I don't think.
What is the most effective way of getting rid of the mice? We tried a few traps both humane and also the snap traps, but nothing has worked so far. We have tried peanut butter, chocolate as bait.

I tried everything. I didn't much like to poison them as they'd go into the walls and die. Leaving their corpses to fester through the house. It's incredibly frustrating to live with. I was on the verge of getting glue traps (wits end - sorry, not sorry) but got a cat instead. No more mice

I would love a cat, but we live near a very busy road.

My cat is house cat only. Doesn't go outside

The snap traps with Nutella. If I thought was infested then I’d try the bucket method ( Google it). I think we have a rat in our walls. The last rat was caught with loop. The sticky maps evidently are good but you have to be ok to get them and kill them very fast. It’s not a nice death but if I could be sure to dispatch as soon as its caught I would. I’d run it over to be instant. You could release a mouse. A rat, I’m not sure it’s ok to take to the woods

Snap traps will work, but they have to be placed along the mouse's usual route to be effective. They run along walls so place your snap trap right alongside the wall straight into their path.
