What A Carry On!

Just arrived for last weekend with FIL before kids go back to school. FIL happily watching a Carry On film. SIL made such a fuss about how unsuitable it was - I know she has a point but the kids had taken the dog out for a walk and FIL got so upset that he’s turned the TV off completely.
So now he’s in a grump and there’s an atmosphere. I’ve escaped to the kitchen to get the lunch. Kids have bought the dog back muddy and SIL is now cross about that too.
Is it wrong to think an elderly man should be allowed to watch what he wants in his own home? I did say that he wasn’t hurting anyone but SIL is a force once she gets going. So now I’m in bad books as well.

Better to watch them and laugh at how outdated the attitudes are- but not to spoil the fun of a man knocking 90.

They were pretty awful, but you can’t pretend it didn’t happen!

I actually think the attitude to Hattie Jakes is almost the worst of it! The rest is sort of pointed, laughing at itself. Ageism and Fatism towards Hettie seems to be accepted.

I said ‘Frying tonight!’ when I was frying sausages the other day. I loved Carry On Screaming as a child.

I think I’ve only see Carry on up the Kyber as an adult and yes I was bit 😲 but it’s part of our comedy history and if one was on I’d let my kids watch it and then have a ‘crikey different times eh!’ conversation.

Carry on Screaming was on recently. It's fabulous.

My favourite is Carry on Cruising. "I'm just going to poop up on the pop deck, I mean pop up on the poop deck!"

😂
Text DH at work to let him know that we are off to a good start. He’s trying to see how many Carry On references he can drop into the conversation this evening. I’m not sure that’s going to be helpful…

I LIKE your dh. SIL can go home

I was a young girl in the 1960s when they were being shown on TV. We watched them as a family.

It's fine to say that these films are "of their time" BUT

I distinctly remember getting the message that it was important to be attractive to men and that there was no greater compliment than to be desired or lusted after by a man.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 05/01/2024 17:46

They’re family films from the panto/music hall heritage. The social attitudes are outdated but I can’t see these would do any more harm to a child (or adult) than would, say, the portrayal of subservient homestead wives in old cowboy films (which aren’t played for laughs).

The men get ridiculed: hapless (Jim Dale), dim (Bernard Bresslaw), weedy (Charles Hawtrey), pompous (Kenneth Connor), weird (Jack Douglas), conniving (Kenneth Williams).

There’s nothing explicit or aggressive in the way they hint at sex and show women’s bodies. There’s no bad language except for double-meaning. All over children’s heads. It’s end of the pier stuff.

I love the Carry On Films. Carry On Up the Khyber, Carry On Screaming, Carry On Cruising, Carry On Don’t Lose Your Head, Carry On Caesar, classics the lot of them.

As a child bought up in the 1960s I loved them , it was my Nana and my thing we watched them together as in went to see them at the movie house, just would laugh and laugh my mother thought they were crude . They are very much of our time, but as you said the man is in his 90,s to him the world has changed so much in the last two decades that he probably thinks you are all just mad.
Lets be truthful what do you all think you kids a watching on TikTok and Facebook , I watch music videos and I’m quite shocked at what little girls watch.

DH is ‘stuck in traffic’. Everyone else wants feeding. Turns out there was a ‘mistake’ with the Tesco order and I’m making lasagne with two packs of mini cheeses (like you put in kids lunchboxes). DS (15) is killing himself laughing, but is helping. It’s past gin o’clock, right?!

Your SIL sounds like a right barrel of laughs. Rude too to tell someone what they can watch in their own home.
