It is so so sad. Was this man vaccinated ?

I think he caught it very early on before anyone was vaxxed

I'm sure that you're just expressing curiosity. But surely you can see that your post comes across as in poor taste and ill timed?

Your reference to Derek as 'this man' also seems rather unfeeling.

ThreeRingCircus · 05/01/2024 15:29

How very sad.

I remember Kate talking about him when she was on I'm a Celebrity and running into his arms when she came out of the jungle. They seemed such a lovely, happy couple.

WhatInTheFuckery · 05/01/2024 15:36

It's so sad. He'd been through a lot after catching Covid, he can hopefully rest peacefully now. No age to pass away and their children are still so young.

JubileeJumps · 05/01/2024 15:40

So incredibly sad. They were obviously a devoted couple.

NoStarsTonight · 05/01/2024 15:47

So sad and devastating for Kate and the kids. In an interview after Derek caught covid she said that after coming out of IMACGMOOH how excited she felt as loads of new opportunities were suddenly there and then life changed in the blink of an eye. But bloody hell that woman was a powerhouse when it came to supporting him and using her platform on GMB to vocalise what so many go through.
I really hope Kate and her kids get space and rest now and are scooped up by their friends and family (don’t forget the parents too - can’t even imagine how they are feeling 😢)
The only thing I take exception to is people saying his love for his family kept him alive for so long. I don’t think people realise how hurtful it is to use words like that but that discussion is probably best left for another thread.

NoStarsTonight · 05/01/2024 15:48

They were such a couple in love even after 20yrs or so of being together. What a devastating loss for them.
I hope to fuck the press leave them alone.

Blue0987 · 05/01/2024 15:49

@namelessnameface It was not all vaccines. It was one specific brand of vaccine and the risk is less of people that get the real virus.

Abhannmor · 05/01/2024 15:53

A tragedy for John Campbell et al. But they will still find a way to blame the vaccine.

RIP Derek 🙏

I imagine it must always have been a case of of when rather than if he passed.

I imagine that for the family it may be like when someone with a terminal illness dies in that so much of the grieving has already been done iyswim.

Very sad but also a release. Know I wouldn’t ever want to live like that.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/01/2024 16:01

I was very sad when the news broke
His poor body was destroyed by Covid
Devoted Kate fought so hard for him, and it was obvious he was so loved by his children
RIP Derek

Samcro · 05/01/2024 16:02

thats sad. poor man has suffered so much. a full life them wham covid hits.

janfebmarchapril · 05/01/2024 16:05

Oh no how awful. That poor family😢

Noseyoldcow · 05/01/2024 16:17

Very sad, but he was so very ill with Covid and it's after effects, then perhaps he's in a better place. I didn't like her using his illness for 2 books and a tv programme or two though.

Are you joking? If I could write a book and get a documentary to raise awareness about suicide and my journey (in my case) whilst also earning money for my kids future damn right I would. I don’t judge her one bit for that.

I imagine she needed to continue to pay the mortgage.

Don't you think Kate would prefer a healthy husband, and a father to her children, than the proceeds of a documentary and book?

Im sure adapting their home wasn't cheap. I seem to remember there was a lot of building work involved and I really hope the proceeds helped with that.

ArcaneWireless · 05/01/2024 17:29

Adapting a home is certainly not cheap. I’m in the process of looking into that now, although I concede it is not due to covid but another debilitating condition.

I’m damned sure I would write a book or take part in a Tv programme to get the best I could to make life easier and more comfortable for my family member instead of worrying about my life savings disappearing and all the implications that will have for the years to come.

I’m also bloody sure she would have preferred a healthy husband and father for her kids but has played her cards the only way she could to do the best by her family.

She did the best she could for her own as well as highlighting what others are having to endure.

I’m sure there are days when she would have preferred to sit in a cupboard and cry. I’ve been there. I’m not proud of it.

She’ll get no judgement but my sympathy and admiration.

Oblomov23 · 05/01/2024 17:35

I too heard the BBC2 news comment that seemed to focus more his 2 political scandals. This focus seemed very gossip related and drama, on someone's death.

Pifful · 05/01/2024 17:41

I'm a bit shocked at the BBC news report on Radio 2, it focused almost entirely on any political rumours of wrongdoings & seemed in rather poor taste so close to the announcement.

I thought the same. Totally unnecessary. The report was dressed up as "condolences to the family" and yet just raked over some ancient alleged misdemeanors. If you can't say anything nice...

I hear you but if I had 2 children , a London mortgage and had to make significant adaptations to the family home , I'd be doing whatever I could too

She put 100% in to do whatever to improve his quality of life

RIP Derek 💙

Blue0987 · 05/01/2024 20:30

I think it is shallow to think that Kate Garraway filmed the documentary only to get the money to pay the mortgage or keep the family going.
She is a journalist: her attitude and preference is to observe, gather, record and share information, even if it is her family. She did it with empathy and compassion.
It was a touching but wonderful way to show what many people had to face because of covid. The documentary could become a piece of history also for doctors and scientists in the future.

Crispedia · 05/01/2024 22:15

Incredibly sad, he and his family have been through so much.

It's a timely reminder of how devastating & scary the virus was in the early days before vaccines & t cell immunity due to repeated infections.

Covid may be killing less people but a major form of long covid is disabling not insignificant amounts of people globally, many of them young adults or middle aged. Maria Van Kerkhove of the WHO is worried about long covid.

This US MD shares her alarm at LC.

Vallmo47 · 05/01/2024 22:23

My condolences to the family, such tragic news. Rest in peace and love Derek.

Depressedhusbandbringingmedown · 05/01/2024 22:31

So sad. She was incredible in that documentary where she was raising teens, dealing with mountains of laundry, working on GMB and still smiling. God it’s so tragic.
I hope she gets Holly’s job on Thus Morning and can move on eventually and meet someone kind and lovely.
