Help am I going to be jobless?

So i work NHS, been offered new job, the email I got from HR was "we are now in a position to offer you the job unconditionally, please can you contact new line manager regarding start date"

Which I did, it's just under 4 weeks time, I have sent a email (via trac) back with the date so they can sort contract as that's what the email said.

I have had to hand my notice in to current line manager because of 4 weeks notice.

I spoke to HR yesterday as I hadn't had a response back, (I know it's been Christmas and that) apparently I shouldn't have handed in my notice, becuse while the email says unconditional, they haven't issued a unconditional offer letter. Still no further on anything and if I haven't heard in 2 weeks go and see them.

Have I messed up? Am I going to be left with no job?

I don't work in the NHS so not sure on how it works but I would never resign without having a new contract signed. Hope you get it sorted.

Ask them to retract your notice.

They may say no but I think that seems unlikely as you're moving to another role within the NHS.

Better yet, ring your manager and also send an email in writing asking to retract your notice. Then if your manager agrees they can confirm in writing. Your manager will know you're waiting on the offer letter which isn't ideal but it isn't the end of the world

I have been stupid, I just presumed as HR made me and new line manager agree start date that it was all okay! Like I say the email does say it's unconditional now. I'm not sure my current manager is going to allow me to retract my notice.

You have done what HR asked you to. It's their problem. Tell them you are starting your new job and they need to sort out the mess they have made

Have you contacted the recruiting line manager? I work in NHS and only get asked to agree new start date with new staff member when all HR checks are complete. It can take a little while for contract to be sent out.

imy087 · 05/01/2024 11:51

@Dizzy82 all checks are complete and yes I have they agreed 30th January, hence why I had to hand my notice in to current manager, otherwise I wouldn't have made it.

I would think it's just HR being a bit slow with sending out contract then. There's probably a backlog of work with Christmas, where I work a lot of people are still off on leave until next week.

Local Authority is similar, takes forever to recruit and even an internal appointment can take about 3 months for HR to process. I was an external candidate and was offered the job and given a start date but still no contract. I refused to hand in my notice at my job until I had something in writing to confirm I had the job, they were keen to have me start so sent me an email saying I definitely had the job. I took the risk and handed in my month notice I only got the full paperwork after I had actually started in post, HR is beyond useless.

Thank you! I am hoping it will work out okay

Looks like HR are on it, while I have had no communication from them, they have updated trac to say starting 30th January, no contract or offer letter but at least they know that's when I am starting.

Trust me, it’s anywhere where there’s an internal move. I’ve moved roles as agreed a month ago. You’d think they’d like me to sign my contract given they’re doubling my notice period but nothing. Not a smidge of communication (apart from from my manager and his manager, who’ve been great).
