Money and internet abroad

So life happens and haven’t been abroad in like a decade. So life has moved on a bit and now completely clueless about money/internet abroad. Have unlimited internet here on phone, what do I need for Europe? Also Apple Pay, do you get a charge added on abroad for every cup of coffee? Take cash? Don’t use Apple Pay unless a credit card etc?

can someone explain things to me as if I’m 5 or any recommendations of somewhere to save me hours of research when it’s really quite simple??

Depends on your mobile provider as to extra charges abroad for internet. We had to temporarily add roaming to our accounts so we could use them abroad. We then cancelled it when we came home.

Again, you'd need to look at the foreign charges made by your credit/debit card providers before using them abroad. My nationwide cards let you use them fee free abroad but some charge commission fees. Or you could get a fee free card just for using on holiday.

Some phone providers (O2 is one) offer free roaming in EU, others charge a daily fee or per gb data. Most payments will use a lower exchange rate rather than fee per transaction.

no more free roaming (thanks brexit!) but check your phone provider either your package includes some data/minutes abroad or you can buy some for the time needed.

wrt to money, wise works well. the card is just like any contactless debit card. but if you go to certain places you can't use it in supermarkets. you need a limited anount of lical cash anyway as back up.
