Do you tip your Ocado delivery driver?

Do you tip your Ocado (or other supermarket delivery) driver at the door?

I saw my FIL do this recently (a smooth, very normal seeming interaction!) and thought eeek, do most people do this? (Because I never have!)

I find tipping culture a bit of a minefield in this country…

I never have though I do tip take away delivery drivers and always add a tip on Deliveroo. Maybe I should be? I’m as grateful to them as I am to the Dominoes bloke 😊

Good lord no. I have a weekly Ocado delivery, they pay their drivers to do the job. What extra service are they providing? They deliver in the bags it says on their system in order their call schedule tells them on the route their sat nav says. No discretionary extra service provided.

RagzRebooted · 03/01/2024 11:01

I don't and I'm sure I read they aren't allowed to take tips, though I've no idea why that would be the case.

TheFlis · 03/01/2024 11:03

We have a weekly Tesco delivery and it has never occurred to me to tip them.

Chypre · 03/01/2024 11:03

No - but also I don't ask them to carry the bags inside, and do actively help to unload the crates. If they would be carrying the bags trough the house and unpack in the kitchen, maybe I would.

Thanks all 😊. Glad to hear it's not a common thing and I'm not being stingy in never having considered it!

And yes @BethDuttonsTwin , I always tip deliveroo/uber eats drivers too.

and yes @Chypre , I think if they're going above and beyond just dropping the bags (no crates with Ocado), then that would be different.

No. I don’t tip supermarket checkout workers, so why on earth would I tip supermarket delivery drivers?

Tipping is outdated, feudal, demeaning and, with the living wage at £11+ per hour, unnecessary.

KindleGirlie · 03/01/2024 12:44

My DH is a supermarket delivery driver and worked over the run up to Christmas.

he got £10 from one customer, and a little cellophane bag with Christmas chocolates from another. Out of hundreds of deliveries. It’s certainly not expected from him, and the chocolates were very much appreciated!

MrsMitford3 · 03/01/2024 12:51

I am def a tipper but not the ocado deliverers-I also tip waitresses, deliveroo drivers, Binmen at christmas, when I get my hair done etc

Ocado literally drop the shopping on my doorstep and no longer even mention substitutions.

It's like tipping Evri/SAmazon/Royal Mail with every parcel-a step too far for me and I have never noticed anyone else doing it.

Tipping is old fashioned and snobbish.

Tipping is old fashioned and snobbish.

Tell the service workers on minimum wage that!

AnnoyingMildew · 03/01/2024 13:02

A Christmas I tip the food delivery drivers £5-10 (depending on what I have in the house).

Not because I need to, but because it's Christmas, so a bit of extra cash is probably a nice thing to get.

changer2010 · 03/01/2024 13:08

No I don't tip ocado drivers, but if they go above and beyond I do feedback to the customer services.

Growlybear83 · 03/01/2024 13:09

I've never thought of tipping the Ocado drivers, because I've never seen the same driver more than once, but I do give a card with a tip inside to the postman and Evri driver. That's because I have a large number of deliveries from Royal Mail and Evri, and always have the same postie/driver from both, who are really helpful and friendly. I don't tip other delivery people because they don't always use the same drivers in the case of Yodel, or are dreadful in the case of DPD and UPS. But this thread has made me feel that I probably should give a small tip to the Ocado driver next Christmas when I have my big delivery.
