Where have my hairy hobbit legs gone?

I'm 44.
Always been really, really hairy. Hairier legs than DH (who is a hairy man).
But suddenly, over the course of about 2 months, it's all but stopped growing. WTF? I've spent my life battling the hair, but now it's gone I'm all discombobulated and want it back.

(NB I know this can be menopause related, but I had a blood test only a few weeks ago and my FSH level was about 7, if this means anything to anyone... not a menopausal level, apparently).

Could be thyroid - low thyroid levels cause body hair loss. How are your eyebrows? The outer 1/3 disappearing is another obvious symptom, along with about 300 (not even joking!) others.

Following!
my legs look sparse - I’m 41

OfMiceandWomen · 03/01/2024 00:03

My leg and underarm hair stopped growing after the menopause.

That happened to me, in my case it turned out to be anaemia

AdoraBell · 03/01/2024 00:08

Same happened to me after menopause.

mrsfollowill · 03/01/2024 00:16

Happened to me once I became menopausal- it all migrated to my face instead so I got a Lumea! I shaved my legs in May and August in 2023 because we were going abroad- very very little to shave and they have now shut down production entirely. From being 11/12 had to shave daily to keep them smooth.
I've used the Lumea on my pits and face so don't get growth there really anymore- shave maybe once a month in Summer if I'm wearing sleeveless but they used to be daily as well.
I still have very thick hair on my head, good eyebrows and lashes thank goodness.

Thelnebriati · 03/01/2024 00:18

I don't want to alarm you but it can be a symptom and its worth seeing your GP.

ALongHardWinter · 03/01/2024 00:25

Same here. My body hair is practically non-existent now. Pre-menopause I had to shave my armpits at least once a week, same with my legs. Now I probably do my armpits about once every 6 weeks, and my legs about once a month. And that's only in summer because I might be wearing dresses or skirts. Thankfully the hair on my head hasn't gone the same way!

Singleandproud · 03/01/2024 00:27

My dad's bare legs is what finally tipped the GP off that he was not depressed but actually had quite severe hypothyroidism apparently symptoms lack of energy etc are similar but the hair lessness was the clincher.

I wasn't aware body hairloss was a side effect of the menopause...thats something I'll be looking forward to in 15 years or so time.

Gowlett · 03/01/2024 00:30

What’s a Lumea? I’d assumed it was a face massage / jowl fixing device. Does it remove hair? My face is getting quite furry…

Gowlett · 03/01/2024 00:53

I’m thinking of Foreo, now I think of it…

SoOutingWhoCares · 03/01/2024 01:10

Happened to my Mum, it's due to Thyroid Disease (Hashimoto's) and she also has lost the outer quarters of her eybrows and her hair has changed a lot. As a child I remember that she had really hairy legs then all of a sudden in her 50s she was smooth. Same with friends with thyroid problems.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/01/2024 01:16

Exactly the same here. Legs and underarms during/ after menopause.
Do you have any symptoms of an under active thyroid? Could possibly be related

Rosario99 · 03/01/2024 01:21

@Thelnebriati a symptom of what?

@Gowlett lumea is a laser hair removal device for at home use made by Philips.

Ladyj84 · 03/01/2024 01:23

That's one symptom of thyroid I don't get wouldn't mind hairless legs tho lol

CherryMaple · 03/01/2024 05:18

I’m 49, and my legs are very hairy. Can I expect all the hair to fall out after menopause - or is it only the lucky few that happens to?

Zoflorabore · 03/01/2024 05:24

This has blew my mind! 46 in a few weeks and the same has happened to me, didn’t think it could be menopause related. I actually have smooth areas amongst the jungle like legs. I’ve still got hair growth everywhere else and a good head of hair.

this is one symptom of menopause I will not complain about 😂

FollicleSchmollicle · 03/01/2024 09:22

Thank you all!

Sounds like I might need another blood test....

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/01/2024 09:27

Menopause here too. Pubes and arm hair practically on existent.

Leg hairs growing like weeds unfortunately.

FollicleSchmollicle · 03/01/2024 09:22

Thank you all!

They’re not supposed to do blood tests to check for menopause these days because they’re only accurate once you’re post menopausal. While you’re perimenopausal your bloods can vary wildly depending on the time of day, so blood tests don’t show anything. NICE guidelines are that they should diagnose based on symptoms. Do you have other meno symptoms?

BMW6 · 03/01/2024 09:47

Post menopause the hair on legs, underarm and pubes decreases but migrates to your chin.

The longest chin hair I've plucked so far was a good 3 inches and I swear the fucker grew overnight like the magic bean vine.
