Help me choose a holiday

If you had £500-£1750 to spend on a solo holiday for a week where would you go?

I like beautiful places and I'd really like to go somewhere a little different/unusual.

Preferably somewhere that many people speak reasonable English as I'm travelling alone

I am reasonably flexible with time of year but there are some months I can't do so it would be January - May. August. October-Dec.

Happy to fly for any length of time

I love interesting buildings, animals, beaches, cities.

Any ideas welcome.

How about Cuba?

Mumaway · 02/01/2024 18:26

Japan. Perfectly safe and easy to do independently, but you might have more fun on a singles group tour....

Umm I'm not sure if it appeals but I appreciate the suggestion. I'm not sure why I don't fancy it.

I think a tour would take it above my budget and I don't think English is widely spoken which worries me as a single traveller. I'd love to go to Japan in the future but with someone.

A cruise to Japan? Brilliant combination of independence and security.

That sounds like a great idea. I wonder if there's one within budget.

A week long cruise to Japan for under £1750?!

A cruise to Norway maybe? Or just a 2 centre visit to Norway or Sweden. The scenery is beautiful and it’s safe and English is widely spoken.

Malta, particularly Valetta sounds like it fits the bill.

Thailand would be a great place to solo travel

Or do a split Italian trip and take in some great cities.

If you have a particular interest you could base around that, like yoga retreat somewhere beautiful, a walking trip in European mountains.

Just returned from Hurghada in Egypt.... Have never been inclined to go before but it was fab. Weather great, we swam with wild dolphins on boxing day. Used an app called Viator to book our excursions (tour reps totally take the piss). You can do an overnight flight to Cairo for pyramids for £80, with guides who speak English. Full day on a boat snorkelling was £15 with lunch and drinks. Day trip to valley of the kings was £30 I think.

CombatBarbie · 02/01/2024 18:55

Overnight trip!!! To Cairo.... There's also a 3 day nile cruise that wasn't expensive.

Greece! I'm going in April... Athens, Olympia, Oracle of Delpi, Mykene, ... basically a round trip to all the ancient historic sites.

I'd love to go to Cuba one day but I heard if you go to Cuba, you won't be able to enter the US for at least a good few years afterwards? I could be wrong. It might be a deal breaker for people who want to do a trip to the US at some point.

mamahg · 02/01/2024 18:57

I'd do a Mediterranean cruise trip! Multiple stops and I reckon it's rather fun doing it solo! Grin

I'd forgotten about this, yes you're right it would affect US visas. Maybe not then....

That’s wrong - you cannot use the ESTA visa waiver scheme, you have to apply for US tourist visa instead.

Budapest might fit the bill. The weather is lovely in September, it's not overly expensive and you could while away a lot of time at the spas and sightseeing, and it's a lot more likely to be in budget than some of the other suggestions.

Rovinj in Croatia is lovely and I'd happily go alone.
