How can a phone be protected?

I have just seen the awful story about the woman who had her savings removed whilst she was asleep through online bank transfers. It seems they had accessed her phone through an app or something being installed on her phone. She said it took over what she could do on her phone.

I also heard about a colleague today who had had scammers ring their mobile and then their home phone number as a way to try and convince him about payments etc. Thankfully he checked with the bank another way.

I just wondered whether there are ways phones can be checked, or any other issues and solutions.

At the moment I am considering somehow moving main savings to somewhere I do not have access through my phone!
