Do your dogs get walked every day, regardless of the weather ? How do they react to going out in the wet and cold ?

Prompted by about half a dozen dogs, including three Border Collies, I saw at our local country park on New Year's Eve. The weather had suddenly closed in with a stiff wind, dark clouds and heavy rain. I was heading back to the car but these dogs either didn't notice how unpleasant the weather was or just didn't care! They scarpered off ahead off their owners, tails wagging and barging through mud and into ditches.

Years ago, our family had three Cocker spaniels of varying ages. The eldest wasn't at all bothered by rain and snow and would still happily go for walks in lousy conditions. She was more of an outdoorsy dog than the younger two. They, on the other hand, could not be persuaded to go outside even in light rain, especially as they aged. Interestingly, all three spaniels took care to avoid remaining mud and puddles in dry weather and would pointedly walk around them. I can't imagine today's loony springer spaniels or weimaraners being so delicate!

@shortandspicy my dog is the same! Give him a manky, freezing cold pond and he would stay in it all day. Put him in a lovely warm bubble bath and he looks like he’s being tortured! Look at his sad little ears 😂

Well honestly poor poor guy. How dare you take away his lovely smell of mud wet dog and whatever else he's rolled in Grin that's his signature fragrance

ActDottie · 02/01/2024 20:02

Yes every day. Normally twice a day but I’m too pregnant for that atm.

We have a Labrador and spaniel cross.

echt · 02/01/2024 20:03

I'm in Melbourne so it sometimes gets to single figures in the mornings in winter. 30 degree + days mean a late evening walk. My dog is walked twice a day off-leash and he adores rain, but then he's a water dog, so he should.

Our Pomeranian gets offended when rain spoils his lovely hair and looks at me as if to say “what are you going to do about this?”🤣

He generally has one good walk a day, he sometimes had two when he was younger, but one plus pottering in the garden a few times a day is enough for him now.

feelingalittlehorse · 02/01/2024 20:08

Well, I’m absolutely stuck in the middle. The older lab is the laziest dog I’ve ever met- been the same since she was 10 weeks old. Any excuse to look like she’s being tortured via exercise- she’ll take it. Rain? No. Wind? No. Puddles from previous rain? No thank you. Mild heat? No.

The younger two, however… the wetter the better as far as they are concerned. Mud is the best thing in the whole wide world and it’s a good job they are brown so I can live in ignorance to the state of them 😬😬😬

megletthesecond · 02/01/2024 20:08

Memo to self; never get a lab, collie or GSD. I'm active but even I'd like a dog that would turn it's nose up at an amber weather warning.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 02/01/2024 20:10

My poodle cross is completely unbothered by any sort of bad weather and loathes her coat. Our new rescue pug hates rain and has to be carried over any puddles or mud.

RedRobyn2021 · 02/01/2024 20:11

Labrador and we go out in all weathers, doesn't matter if it's a storm we go out. Twice a day.

I take my 2yo too.

I find people very strange about the weather, I was at another mums house for a play date and they wouldn't let the kids play in the garden because it was a bit windy.

lto2019 · 02/01/2024 20:11

My dog (and me ) don't mind the cold but "we' don't like the rain. If his fur gets wet it takes for ever to dry with a towel and then hair dryer and he doesn't like a coat either. It has been throwing down here all day and he has only been out to have a wee and then has run back in straightaway.

momager1 · 02/01/2024 20:23

2 dogs here! One would walk thru anything.. the other HATES rain. When we lived in Canada they had access to a massive back garden that backed onto woodlands , and they ran our garden sometimes for hours, once a day we would go thru the back gate into the woods and let them sniff around. Not ever off leash because of coyotes in our woods. Now , we have no garden and live in an apartment with just a balcony. They get two long walks a day, morning on the beach, before bed around the area. It is too hot for a mid day walk any day of the year. They seem happy still, but I often wonder if they miss their big back yard in Canada

Our neighbours dog hasn't been out the house since March.

Seriously?!

HoHoHolyCrap · 02/01/2024 20:38

How could you possibly know this? Do you watch them 24/7??

TwentyTwentyFourIsHere · 02/01/2024 20:39

Every day for at least one walk. There are very few days when it is raining constantly all day and there isn't even a short break (even if just drizzle) to get out. I aim for that window.

If the weather is bad, like today, he just gets one walk. We managed it at 8am this morning and it just started to rain as we got back - but it then rained for the rest of the day so we didn't go out again.

Most days he gets walked twice.

chattyness · 02/01/2024 20:44

Every day unless it's really stormy due to the risk of trees coming down in the woods where we walk and we don't want to be sandblasted on the beach. There's been a lot of huge trees down with the storms lately blocking the paths and they're hard to get around but we don't want to be hit by any either

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/01/2024 20:46

Dogs need to be walked daily, it’s a necessity not a choice. I’ve been soaked twice today. My dog isn’t so keen when it’s pouring but she goes. Got a quick dry jacket for when we get back .

RandomMess · 02/01/2024 20:54

My Parsons just asked to go out to toilet, took one look at the rain and refused to go out. We shall have an argument about it at bedtime, I more stubborn than her fortunately.

She will not walk in rain or if very cold 🙄

wishuponastar1988 · 02/01/2024 21:00

We have a staffy and she is very particular Grin she won't walk in the rain or wind and sometimes we get to the park and she will turn around to go home after doing her business. She will walk when she wants to and not on anyone else's terms Grin she is offered 2 walks a day but will happily miss walks if she is that way inclined or the weather doesn't meet her standards! Very stubborn!

EvilElsa · 02/01/2024 21:05

Yes, twice/three times a day every day without fail. We've never had a day when she hasn't been out twice at least. Luckily she couldn't give a shit about rain, wind or cold so it's not difficult!

Bandolina · 02/01/2024 21:05

What this thread is missing is more muddy dog pics

Tumbleweed101 · 02/01/2024 21:07

My lurcher goes out happily whatever the weather. My cavalier spaniel is a wimp and runs away if I open the door and it's raining. I have to make sure he can't escape the kitchen so I can herd him out for a wee. He will go for a walk in the rain, starts off enthusiastic but soon looks sorry for himself!

PrimalLass · 02/01/2024 21:08

Retriever - every day, twice a day no matter the weather. We live by the sea and by farmland and it's a mud bath everywhere.

ruralwanderer · 02/01/2024 21:12

My dog adores bad weather. His favourite is when it rains so hard that raindrops bounce back up off the ground so he gets two opportunities to try and catch them.

He gets walked twice a day, every day, regardless of weather conditions and my personal preferences (though when I'm soaked to the skin and knee deep in mud, I often mourn my previous dog who was happy to cross his legs and let the storm pass).

Open the door. Dog inspects weather. Gives me The Look. You're not seriously expecting me to go out in that? Turns and walks away. Hates rain or having wet feet.

Exactly like mine. We have to push her out to go to the loo. Even then she'll pee on the nearest plant and run straight back inside looking very dusgusted by the inhumanity of it all.

DifficultPifficultLemonDifficult · 02/01/2024 21:21

@Bandolina, happy to oblige, one very muddy puppy from earlier today 🤣
