Do your dogs get walked every day, regardless of the weather ? How do they react to going out in the wet and cold ?

Prompted by about half a dozen dogs, including three Border Collies, I saw at our local country park on New Year's Eve. The weather had suddenly closed in with a stiff wind, dark clouds and heavy rain. I was heading back to the car but these dogs either didn't notice how unpleasant the weather was or just didn't care! They scarpered off ahead off their owners, tails wagging and barging through mud and into ditches.

Years ago, our family had three Cocker spaniels of varying ages. The eldest wasn't at all bothered by rain and snow and would still happily go for walks in lousy conditions. She was more of an outdoorsy dog than the younger two. They, on the other hand, could not be persuaded to go outside even in light rain, especially as they aged. Interestingly, all three spaniels took care to avoid remaining mud and puddles in dry weather and would pointedly walk around them. I can't imagine today's loony springer spaniels or weimaraners being so delicate!

Good god I've got a whippet princess and she drives me nuts. We went for a walk in the rain one day last week and she spent the entire walk trying to stay between my legs, whilst crying like she was being murdered.

Nap1983 · 02/01/2024 19:33

Weather makes no difference to my Lab, he wants his walks. (Obv careful in heat) He loves water and mud…

MrsDilligaf · 02/01/2024 19:33

Daft spaniel, loves a walk but on his terms. Not keen on windy weather, not too happy about going out in the rain either. To be honest he would be a rubbish working dog, he's happiest snoring and farting on his bed.

He will turn round and head for home when he's had enough, I've been throwing tennis balls for him, and he'll pick it up and wander off towards home.

No my shih poo would rather have her bladder burst than go out for a wee in the rain. She’s a drama queen!

Goodgriefisitginfizzoclock · 02/01/2024 19:35

Two cockers here, not keen on poor weather also. In fact when I open the back door just for a wee in garden they both look at me as if to say, actually I can hold on I’m not going out in that! Then I have to manhandle them outside!

Lifechange2023 · 02/01/2024 19:35

My princess pokes her nose out in the rain and walks straight back into the house in disgust. Not a chance of getting her out in the rain. Even a wee is a problem, she would rather hold it in all day. Bladder of steel

AllAroundMyCat · 02/01/2024 19:36

Border Collies are usually working dogs and have a huge herding instinct so they're used by shepherds in all weathers.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 02/01/2024 19:37

I have a dachshund.

Enough said.

I have a St Bernard who gets walked in the snow/rain/howling wind, its her absolute favourite when its freezing cold, but she doesn't fair well when the weather gets hot.

I have a Yorkshire terrier who is the total opposite, she won't set foot outside if its cold, but loves it when it's warmer.

I'm out walking dogs regardless 🤣

I love that even a thread about dogs in the rain turns into an argument! They’re dogs! They’re all different. No right or wrong.

Maybe the owners need to go and skip in the rain with or without the dogs?

tadpolelove · 02/01/2024 19:42

5 dogs here and they haven't been walked since sept/October. Fuck walking in the wind and rain 🤦🏻‍♀️

MargaritaThyme · 02/01/2024 19:45

Yes, ours got walked every single day and they didn’t give a monkey’s about bad wether. But they were lurchers & working terriers; real dogs, not pampered, mollycoddled ‘fur babies’.

Losingmymind85 · 02/01/2024 19:45

Whippet pup who hates strong wind and rain. Will refuse point blank to move.
Will however do 2h at the park in the pissing rain. There's squirrels there. Squirrels beat rain in the whippet "rock/paper/scissor" of life.

BethDuttonsTwin · 02/01/2024 19:47

3 walks a day - 2 x one hour and then a twenty minute walk last thing. No matter what the weather. He’s a complete restless monster otherwise.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 02/01/2024 19:48

Every day twice. She doesn’t get to choose.

It's my goldens absolute favourite thing in the world to go out in torrential rain and jump on as many bogs as possible until she is so muddy she could pass for a brown dog. The muddier, wetter, colder the better to her. However, she hates baths and warm clean water. She could have just been swimming in the mucky river during a storm but will avoid the hosepipe and mud daddy like it's torture !
She loves the cold, dark, wind and rain. Would stay out in the snow all day. Doesn't mind the heat and has to be told to settle down when it's too hot. If it's crazy hot we don't walk her but she does complain about that. We are out in any other weather all year long for a good few hours a day.

You have described my golden perfectly. She absolutely thrives in extreme, miserable weather. She sat out in the snowy garden for ages this time last year, I had to bribe her inside with cheese!

HazelWicker · 02/01/2024 19:52

Also a member of the golden retriever club. I have two and they don't bat an eyelid at bad weather. Love a swim and the youngest in particular loves the muck.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/01/2024 19:52

Mine would have to be dragged out if it was raining. He would wait until he was nearly wetting himself to go out in bad weather.

Oh the threads about dogs often get heated! There was one recently about dogs wearing coats - one poster was getting very angry about them. Apparently no dog should ever wear one, regardless of the weather or temperature, and people who do put them on their dogs shouldn’t have a dog in the first place Confused

@AlwaysGinPlease

Yes it's really simple, take them out when it's windy, they will get used to it 🤯

Aggressive defensiveness...it's telling... the problem is you.

Dogs need to socialise, to exercise, to sniff. it's what dogs do.

boys3 · 02/01/2024 19:56

Ours loves the wind, cold even better. Less keen on the rain, particularly when incessant and heavy as it has been here all day and still into the evening.

Melonandfalafel · 02/01/2024 19:57

Cavalier walked whatever the weather - doesn’t care at all. He gets minimum of 2 hours a day. He just doesn’t like going out late at night, whatever the weather.

Aggressive? My post wasn't aggressive at all. You're being very silly. I've had dogs that like it and dogs that don't, I certainly don't need a lecture from you madam 😂

IfTheresTeaTheresHope · 02/01/2024 19:59

Every day whatever the weather, we’ve had 5 dogs (currently have dogs 4&5) during 28 years of marriage and there’s not a day that our dog/s wouldn’t be walked. Christmas morning the dogs have always been walked before the children even opened any gifts.
