Do your dogs get walked every day, regardless of the weather ? How do they react to going out in the wet and cold ?

Prompted by about half a dozen dogs, including three Border Collies, I saw at our local country park on New Year's Eve. The weather had suddenly closed in with a stiff wind, dark clouds and heavy rain. I was heading back to the car but these dogs either didn't notice how unpleasant the weather was or just didn't care! They scarpered off ahead off their owners, tails wagging and barging through mud and into ditches.

Years ago, our family had three Cocker spaniels of varying ages. The eldest wasn't at all bothered by rain and snow and would still happily go for walks in lousy conditions. She was more of an outdoorsy dog than the younger two. They, on the other hand, could not be persuaded to go outside even in light rain, especially as they aged. Interestingly, all three spaniels took care to avoid remaining mud and puddles in dry weather and would pointedly walk around them. I can't imagine today's loony springer spaniels or weimaraners being so delicate!

I have a Dalmatian who hates the rain. He would physically pull me back home if I tried to take him out in this. I do offer him the opportunity though!

Our border collie goes out in all weathers and needs a good solid play and walk every day. The only difference is that when it’s really rainy she snoozes on the back doormat when at home rather than the patio outside 🤣 in the summer she is outside 16 hours a day!

GreatGateauxsby · 02/01/2024 17:21

Nope…
our girl is 100% a Mary poppins walker….

not too hot, not too cold, not too windy….the weather needs to be practically perfect in every way 😅

GSD. Does not remotely care what the weather is and will happily swim in the stream even if it involves having to jump up and down on the ice first (which is hilarious to watch). Simply doesn’t notice rain, loves snow more than life itself. Has also been known to jump into the water troughs especially when it’s hot, much to the horses’ disapproval…

MrsBigTed · 02/01/2024 17:22

My heinz57 (terrior flavour) would go out no matter what, not even sure she notices the rain, but she's old and arthritic and the damp weather hurts her., so now we say no. The mind is willing, but the body unable. Makes me really sad.

afaloren · 02/01/2024 17:22

I’ve got a Labrador so I’m out every day regardless. The muddier and wetter the better as far as he’s concerned!

Vicliz24 · 02/01/2024 17:24

My whippet can't even be persuaded onto the patio for a wee on days like this . He develops a cast iron bladder/ bowels and hangs on to everything.

Rosario99 · 02/01/2024 17:24

Don't dogs need a walk to go to the toilet? Do they hold it in or have accidents on days they don't go for a walk? Or do they just go pee and poo in your back garden?

Iheartmysmart · 02/01/2024 17:24

My old cocker spaniel hated the rain and puddles and absolutely detested the wind. Unfortunately for him, we lived in a flat so we had to go out for a walk quite frequently and in all weathers so he could go to the toilet. Lost count of the amount of times I’d put all my waterproofs on only for him to have a quick pee on the closest bit of grass then run like mad back to the front door. Took me longer to put all my gear on than we were out for!

TheTecknician · 02/01/2024 17:25

Seems like some dogs aren't bothered by wet weather and mud, some embrace it and some avoid it.

What about going to the beach ? Quite a popular walking spot in the winter, I expect.

I have two French spaniels. One doesn’t care. Rain, snow, thunder, hurricane, biblical plague - he wants out. So out we go.

His sister is affronted if you even threaten to bring a lead within 5 feet of her if the weather is anything less than optimal. She is a Queen and will settle herself by the radiator and look down her nose at us mere mortals who have to take her loony brother out 😂 they are funny

My lab wants to be out in all weathers. I don’t think she’d care if she was in a hurricane as long as she had her tennis ball

Same as my 10 month old lab , in fact she goes looking for her special puddle in the park when she gets there . No shits given .

Daniki · 02/01/2024 17:25

Iv a collie and he loves all weather except windy/stormy. The wind frightens him so on days like that we wouldn't bother but otherwise yes!

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/01/2024 17:26

I have Spanish Podencos - they all hate the rain and the wind. One in particular has a hangdog sad face like you have never seen before, lol. They go out briefly for a wee etc but I don’t force walks on them if the weathers bad - you literally need to drag them round and it’s a nightmare for all of us!

Shade17 · 02/01/2024 17:34

Ours hates the wet in typical sighthound fashion. We try and get him out for a short walk when it’s raining but he’d rather stay at home.

Bookworm12345 · 02/01/2024 17:38

Our Collie isn't overly keen on wet, windy weather but still enjoys a walk everyday regardless of the weather. We try to avoid the muddy fields though and head to the beach instead where she'll jump in the sea in all temperatures! It's cleaner this time of year to let her get sandy rather than muddy 😂

Mumofyellows · 02/01/2024 17:40

2 labs, they will go out in whatever weather! One is more reluctant but as soon as she is out she is ok, eg this morning it was pouring and blowing a hooley but hubby took them to the beach and sent me a video at work of them having an absolute blast! Yesterday however they were recovering after a really long and hilly walk the day before so were very happy to just have a short leg stretch on the beach then spent the afternoon snoozing on the sofa, with a little walk for a wee before bed!

StoorieHoose · 02/01/2024 17:40

My collie goes out in all types of weather. But she doesn't really like the wind if it's dark

I have to take her out for at least three walks a day. Worst walks are when it's cold and wet and she just wants a sniff walk

crumblingschools · 02/01/2024 17:41

We’ve had to literally shove our dog outside to do a wee today, would not be impressed if we got his lead out

Onceuponaheartache · 02/01/2024 17:42

I have a jack russell/chihuahua Cross...she hates being cold or wet but she gets dragged out three times a day!

This.

Our lab adores wet and miserable weather. We've some cracking puddles new lakes round here, and he's loving leaping through them!

Spookymormonhelldream · 02/01/2024 17:43

Twice a day for my doodle or he goes absolutely bananas. He doesn't give a shit about the weather 😂.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 02/01/2024 17:44

My Romanian rescue goes out regardless of the weather, if it’s tipping down and blowing she has a coat but otherwise she has a double coat so doesn’t feel the cold.
Sometimes she needs encouraging out the door if it’s particularly foul but happily trots along once we’re through the gate!

Jorvik1978 · 02/01/2024 17:45

We have a lab X GSD who does not care in the slightest what the weather is doing, he loves a walk or run regardless. I have to do the horse twice a day so have to be out no matter what the weather is doing so the dog comes along as well.

pinksheetss · 02/01/2024 17:45

We have two shar peis and they hate the rain so won't go out in that, often don't like going out in the snow either
