Please help me find the right dining table

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 02/01/2024 14:21

After how great Mumsnet was at helping people find Christmas presents I thought I'd try and see if I can find the right table.

When we moved into our house we took a couple of months deciding on the table we wanted. We got it custom made (no more expensive than the already expensive oak furnitureland etc). I love the look of it. Hate it as a table - the middle extending section can't be stored in the table, so it takes up room in a wardrobe. It's heavy, too big, and the runner bits underneath are sharp.
I also feel the look of it is a bit ruined by being an extending table, as the top is split in two pieces (3 with the extending panel)

What I'm looking for:
A square 4 seater table, than extends to a 6 seater.

Kind of like this, but I'm not keen on the leg positioning when it's extended, as it doesnt look comfortable to sit around: 1st option

So more like this, but this has a join (which I can live with, rather than the odd leg positions): 2nd option

In an ideal world it'd also be half the price of these two. But I can save up for the right table.

2nd link seems to be broken, so trying again
2nd option

There’s a few extendable ones on Habitat website depending on what size you need. This one is similar to the second option https://www.habitat.co.uk/product/9397109?clickPR=plp:3:15

Thank you, I'll take a look there.
That one is more like the first option, with the legs looking like you'd have to sit with a table leg between your legs when you have 6 people around it
Weird design

My table is 90cm that doubles to 180cm and you can sit someone either side of the leg and one in the middle for 6 people or add a person at end to seat 8.

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 03/01/2024 07:10

@NotFastButFurious sounds perfect. Is yours the habitat one in the link?

Have you tried cotswold company?

NotFastButFurious · 03/01/2024 08:56

No, it was from an independent place years ago.

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 03/01/2024 15:10

Ikea has one, which is functionally what I'm looking for (not quite square, but close enough), but I'm not keen on the look.
I am keen on the price 😁

Ikea version

They explain it better than me - then it extends the legs are still in the corners.
So you can still slide the chairs under.

EKEDALEN oak, Extendable table, Min. length: 80 cm - IKEA

EKEDALEN oak, Extendable table, Min. length: 80 cm. A durable dining table that makes it easy to have big dinners. A single person can extend the table and there’s plenty of room for chairs since the legs are always located at the corners of the table.

I had a look today, thanks for the suggestion. Some lovely furniture, but not quite what I'm looking for.

It must be underneath, but they probably removed it for the photos!
It's a nice size, I like that one.

They also sell a 6-8 seater version of that table and one of the more recent reviews says that the leaf extension can’t be stored within the table, so probably the same goes for the 4-6 seater. Probably why it’s a good price.

This one isn’t at all cheap but it is lovely. We’ve got the ercol Romana one and the extension mechanism is great - the mechanism for this is different but it’s also v smooth and easy.

DO NOT BUY THE HABITAT LINCON ONE!!!

We bought it several years ago. In the end they sent us 5 of them before they sent one which wasn't wonky. (Waiting in for delivery and collection each time and all the back and forth) They were really hesitant to take back the damaged ones too. We should have just asked for a refund because the table very quickly warped at the edges as the ridge down the edge of the table is not sealed so as soon as any water is spilt on it absorbs some and the wood expands even if you quickly mop it up (hard to get all the water because of the ridge). Habitat customer service was awful- they told us they would give us a store credit foe all the inconvenience, but never did. Do not buy it!

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 03/01/2024 21:09

Thanks for everyone's input.

There seems to be a real shortage of small tables that extend. Most are the standard 4-6 seater (extending to 6-8). I suppose that's what is most popular.

I'd go independent again, but I'm put off by the sharp runners underneath (which I've never noticed in a mass produced table). I've caught my leg on it a few times and I'm forever shouting at the kids to get out from under the table 😆

@Talipesmum that is lovely, but out of my price range (for now). I'll keep a link to it in case I come into some money!
