HMRC refund taking ages

I’m due a significant refund from HMRC as I’ve overpaid tax and they’re taking their sweet time about it. It takes ages to get through to anyone on the phone and every time I speak to them they change their timeline. I’m so fed up! Anyone else had to deal with this? If I owed them tax they would be fining me for each day it was delayed but when they have our money they can happily sit on it for as long as they like. What a joke.

Anytime I've been due a tax rebate I've just requested it on my online gateway thing. Can you not do it like that?

I always used to do that but now it says "if we owe you any money, you do not need to contact us" or something to that effect. It's a joke, we basically have to sit around waiting for months on end until til they decide to pay it!

This is what I've had too. I believe I'm due a rebate from tax over payment and when I try to get through on the phone, it is never answered! As the pp says, we're supposed to wait for them to get in touch, if they ever will.

Weird I got through really quick to them and got the overpayment and tax rebate quickly. They checked it out and calculated the amount, over £900 and then arranged for it to be refunded to me in my next pay

The request has gone through and they’ve approved it but the payment is “pending” in the portal. The first time I called up they told me it would take 3 weeks. I called after 3 weeks and was told it would be that 10 weeks from the date the request was submitted. When I told them customer service agent that 10 weeks had passed since my request she changed it to 10 weeks from the date of my call. It seems like they just make up stuff.

They're very odd, I have an ongoing saga with them after submitting 3 years worth of returns together. The first year I got one years payment only so chased them up and they claimed to have no record of the other 2. The accountant said they'd probably filed all 3 as one. We re-submitted the other 2, got paid for one, but not the other although it's been processed, I got a separate letter through about it.

I'm psyching myself up for a morning on the phone waiting for a Real Person to chase it up. A real pain, everything is so much harder than it used to be. Nothing seems straightforward any more. It seems it's either really quick or drags on for ages with HMRC
