Are you in your ‘Forever House’?

Do you think you’ll move again?
Are you happy with that decision, either way?

DH thinks we’ve got another move in us, I think not.
Together, we have moved houses four times in 30 years. That’s more than enough for me.

We've been in this house for 17 years at the end of January. We've had a lift conversion to go from 4 bedroom to 6 bedroom plus a huge conservatory extension. When all DC at home we needed the space. Now it's just me, DH and 1 foster son. DH wants to stay put but I'd love to downsize to a 3 bedroom. DH doesn't want to lose our enormous garden with foster sons full length cricket net in. I think we should move whilst we are still young and able enough to do it ourselves. I'd hate to leave having to sort through and sell this house to our kids if ever we needed to go into a home. DH just point blank refuses to listen. If DH died first I'd definitely move and downsize.

Yes. Bought this house when we were engaged, 20 years ago. I hate moving (we moved every 4/5 years when I was growing up, then I left home and had a series of rented flats).

When we bought this house I said "I'm never moving again!" and I've stuck by it.

Of course, it's too small, needs a new kitchen and an overhaul upstairs, but we are in a fabulous location and although I love a mooch on Rightmove nothing else ever comes up to my location standards 😄😄

We’ll move again. Over the past 22 years we’ve lived in a 2 bed flat, 3 bed semi, five bed Victorian terraced, and now a four bed detached house. We love being detached, but we’d like to be detached more rurally in the next five years. We’ve been unlucky when it comes to neighbours, and we want the quiet life. We’re 40 and 41 with two teenagers. Hopefully the next will be the last!

No. This is our first house that we've brought together but we've moved 5 times. We were going to move next year but we've decided to extend our current house and move in 5-10 years

Maybe, we’ve moved moved to another country, if it works and we’re all happy and we stay this will definitely become our forever home. Its the first house I or our children have ever lived in, its in a nice area, but also a short walk to the city centre. Where we’ve moved to is also very expensive, theres a housing shortage and people generally buy a home as a forever home, so moving here would be quite tricky.

Yes, as in I can't afford to move.

But, I would have liked somewhere bigger. My DC have the 2 bedrooms so I'm on the sofa. But, I know I'm not alone in not being able to afford anywhere bigger. I feel very privileged to own my own house and to have been able to decorate it and make it nice.

bozzabollix · 02/01/2024 22:48

I think so, we bought it very much as a project. It’s in a brilliant location. But I don’t think we could be infirm living here, it’s the type of house in the woods that wants to return to nature. Not sure how we could fight that as we’re getting older. That’s the main worry.

BeaLola · 02/01/2024 22:54

No - we will probably move once more once DS has left home.

This is only the 3rd place I have ever lived in my lifetime and I'm mid fifties.

weegiemum · 02/01/2024 23:31

We own 2 homes, the one we live in now (in a city) and we still own our previous home (in a remote, rural location).

We're likely to stay where we are until dh retires (I'm disabled and don't work) and subject to a couple of modifications, we'll retire to our other house and sell where we are right now. We spend as much time as we can there at the minute but it all depends on dh holidays.
