Facial recognition is used to exit Hong Kong. You insert your passport into the machine, look into the camera and it compares the two. There's no fingerprints associated with your passport. It's quick and efficient. The queues for exit immigration used to be horrendous at peak times. The last few times I've been the longest lines were 3 people deep.
