Is anyone else’s teen at home with them tonight?

Asifiwouldnt · 31/12/2023 20:11

My older teen is perfectly happy being in tonight (I think) but I feel sad somehow. School just didn’t really work for them socially and they aren’t really one for clubbing but I somehow feel deeply sad that a 19 year old is home with her parents on NYE - I know I need to get over it.

Anyone else feel like this or reassure me?

Comparison is the thief of joy , just appreciate the time with her and don’t project what you think her life should be like onto her

MrsFloof · 31/12/2023 20:49

Yes 18 and 16 year old here with us. The 18 year old is happy and doing well and turned down 2 parties to stay with us. The 16 year old is anxious and won't leave house. But they are both having a nice time and glad they are both with us. 18 year old went out today with a friend.

SutWytTi · 31/12/2023 20:49

I honestly think they are less inclined as a cohort to go out.

It is a shame things didn;t work out at school but if she is not traumatised and has good things in her life just go with it.

Picklemeyellow · 31/12/2023 20:50

DS18 has gone out, hardly see him these days, he is always out and about.
However, dd15 doesn’t go out much. She only has 2 other main friends from school. One is off out to a family nye party and her other friend is also at home.
Dd is feeling a bit glum so we’ve just treated her to a Chinese. She’s now upstairs watching Netflix.
I do worry about her.

Welcome to 2023, teens aren’t the same as they were when we were kids! They aren’t interested in going out and drinking/ partying.

let her be.

Really? All the teens I know are.

itsmyp4rty · 31/12/2023 20:53

Mine is almost 18 and very happily at home. God knows what I was up to on NYE at his age but I'm very glad he's not like I was!

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 31/12/2023 20:56

From age 17/18 ish to late 20s I spent some NYE at home (family then own), some at parties/gatherings and one in a city centre. Home was actually the nost enjoyable for me, even though we didn't do that much.

Teen DS (16) is gaming online and I can hear him chatting too.

Fizbosshoes · 31/12/2023 20:57

I have a 17 year old who would much prefer to be out, (she'll have some drinks) and a 14 year old who will probably be on his xbox or watching videos (he might play a game if I suggested it)

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 31/12/2023 21:06

DD almost 20 has tonsillitis so on antibiotics and in her pyjamas on the sofa with DH, DD13 and I. She doesn’t seem to have FOMO , I assume that’s because she has a very full social life usually.

Ours are home. We've had a nice meal and now we're watching James Bond, they're all happy!

I have DD19 here at home with me, and we’re watching Bond as well!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 31/12/2023 21:11

Both of mine (19 and 17) are. We're just watching a Christmas film then will get the board games out.

My experience also…it’s perfectly natural for teenagers to be out on NYE.

StarDolphins · 31/12/2023 21:17

I’m so glad things are changing. Thinking back to being out all night, walking home, people back at my flat. I felt safe (invisible?) but these days, I think it’s the norm not to go out clubbing. I joke (hope) with my DD that nights out for her will
be at Costa!

I think it’s quite normal these days op & she must be happy with her choice. Enjoy your time together❤️

Bellyblueboy · 31/12/2023 21:22

I hated clubbing. Felt pressured to go out and spend far too much money having a miserable time.

my parents would have thought it was weird or sad if I stayed in.

I am 44 - having a lively night in-front of the fire. They are out at the golf club. I can’t think of anything worse😂.

I wish I had felt comfortable enough in my own skin to stay home as a teen.

Lovemusic82 · 31/12/2023 21:26

Both at home. 17 and 19.

369damnshesfine · 31/12/2023 21:33

So glad you started this thread!

I’m downstairs and my teen is upstairs and we’re both gaming and I felt very sad that I didn’t do something for her.

Lots of events have actually been cancelled near me though, so even if I had planned an outing we probably wouldn’t have been able to go.

I think that’s what I struggle with is because I was so outgoing and would use any excuse to go and get pissed with my friends.
Whereas my DD is a proper introvert.

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2023 21:37

Mine is too, and will be going to bed well before midnight.

heartsinvisiblefury · 31/12/2023 21:40

Mine all at home - no desire to be in a busy bar

Nowayjose123 · 31/12/2023 21:41

I've a 28 year old who's out in the town partying with a big group of friends. I also have a 24 year old and a 15 year old quite happily pottering around at home right now. We're all different and crowds, alcohol and noise are fun for some, hell for others!

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 31/12/2023 21:43

It's not the same now.

We had to go out just to interact with people.

Now you can game, interact on social media, online quiz, WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat all that stuff.

You don't miss out as much by staying in

NewyearNewyear2024 · 31/12/2023 21:49

Mine are. No interest in going out even on a normal night. I wish they would!

MyLeftKnee · 31/12/2023 21:53

20 yr old is out but just at a friend's house, just them, no pub/club. 16 year old is watching James Bond with his dad, me and youngest are already in bed.
