Qui peut faire de la voile sans vent
qui peut faire du pain sans vin
et qui peut quitter son ami
sans verser des larmes?

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 01/01/2024 11:15

A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book

dressedforcomfort · 01/01/2024 11:36

So many good ones!

'Eleanor Rigby
Puts on a face that she keeps in a jar by the door,
Who is it for?'

Or pretty much anything by Paul Heaton, Shane McGowan, Morrissey, Kirsty McColl or Guy Garvey...

Only the very young and the very beautiful can be so aloof
Hanging out with the boys, all swagger and poise

Put down your tablets and pick up your pen
and I'll put you together again.

Those people who surround you
Only want to see you weak enough to crawl
They'll lie for you, decide for you
And buy up all your rights and all your wrongs
And they'll try to stop your singing
In the middle of your song
For they do not want you free
And they will not make you strong
But only drag you down
The hole they're coming from

Janis Ian

(Does this apply to anyone in your life?)

The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

You're too much for one man, and not enough for two

As mentioned by pp Midnight train to Georgia ' I'd rather be with him in his world than be without him in mine'

I always took it that he had died, and she didn't want to be alive anymore. The whole song is just euphemisms.

Edited

Oh blimey no l just assumed she was giving up her whole life for him - my ex did that for me and l always felt so guilty!
Def not a death song.

Home is where your heart is, but what a shame ‘cause everyone's heart doesn't beat the same, it's beating out of time

The strong are sometimes wrong but the weak are never free

The choice we made, we can’t evade, don’t try to follow me .

Great song.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 01/01/2024 18:19

There's a man outside
In a long coat, grey hair, smoking a cigarette

Now the light fades out.
And I wonder what I’m doing in a room like this.
A.F.E - Tubeway Army

Love it 😻

@CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau Jesus of Suburbia, it’s full of excellent lines though.

cunningartificer · 01/01/2024 21:21

You gave me babies, to you that proves your love
Tie my hands with jewels
Barefoot an' pregnant you kept me
You sought to hide me from the truth

But your lady's done bought some shoes
And she's steppin' out on the town
Your lady took herself in hand
And she's spreadin' herself around

Lalaleavemealone · 01/01/2024 21:31

Operator, number please
It's been so many years
Will she remember my old voice
While I fight the tears?

Take a look at these crows’ feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes,
Sixty 25th Decembers, fifty-nine Fourth of Julys,
You can’t have too many good times, you can’t have too many lines,
Take a good look at these crows’ feet, sitting on the prettiest eyes.

…Well, my face looks like a map of the town,
And my teeth are either yellow or they’re brown,
But you’ll never hear the crack of a frown when you are here,
You’ll never hear the crack of a frown.

’Prettiest Eyes’ by the Beautiful South. Never fails to bring a lump to my throat.

Aribaariba · 01/01/2024 22:07

@daisychain01 ...the song you're referring to in the lyrics you quoted are from "Cuddly Toy" by Andrew Roachford and the band "Roachford", Harry Nilsson wrote another, completely different song with the same name and lyrics some years earlier.

The "Roachford" version:

Aribaariba · 01/01/2024 22:10

I meant to say "same name different lyrics".

FrangipaniBlue · 02/01/2024 12:34

Remembered another when it popped up on my playlist out running this morning:

"It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life."

MrsSlocombesCat · 02/01/2024 12:39

Does anybody know how long till World War Three, I want to know I want to book my holiday. Tom Hark by the Piranhas.
And because I love planes Move yourself and glide like a 747 from Let’s Groove by Earth Wind and Fire.

MagpieCastle · 02/01/2024 12:45

Time it was, oh what a time it was; a time of innocence, a time of consequences.
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.

existentialpain · 02/01/2024 13:06

Although I search myself it's always someone else I see

Namechange4448830938489 · 02/01/2024 19:25

I hear him, before I go to sleep
And focus on the day that's been
I realise he's there
When I turn the light off and turn over

and

You'll never see that you had all of me
You'll never see the poetry you've stirred in me
Of all the stars I've seen that shine so brightly
I've never known or felt in myself so rightly

and

I believe in miracles
'Cause it's a miracle I'm here
