Just that really? I think it's OK for DS 9 to, first time.

Thoughts?

Mine was much older, around 11/12. He was always an early sleeper when 9 and wouldnt have made midnight plus would have been super tired and grumpy the next day. I wouldnt bother, stick to routine until kids are older

Comfysock · 31/12/2023 18:46

Also they get to a time/lull during the night with over tireness. Some friends let their kids stay up last year, started off fine, played games had a fit as lost...ate too much during night and was sick

Angelmonkey · 31/12/2023 18:46

My children are 12 and 8 but won’t be staying up. They are dreadful when over tired and as they are back at school on Tuesday, I feel it’s best they go to bed as normal!

Never
Imo it's a time for adults.... we've just put ourselves through all the Xmas shit!

Howmanysleepsnow · 31/12/2023 18:51

6 or 7? Mine always tried to stay up, and were generally carried up asleep any time from 9pm to midnight. Once they managed to stay awake, they were allowed. There’s plenty of time to edge bedtime earlier before school.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 31/12/2023 18:53

Mine were allowed to stay up if they wanted to and could stay awake - we would always spend the evening with my brother and his family. My son was very excited about staying up for the Millenium, at 2 and 7 months, but in the event fell asleep and missed it. After that year he was always awake for midnight.

hometimesanta · 31/12/2023 18:54

At 9 mine had probably seen in several new years. Not sure why you feel it's something you need to ask others about though? Let DC stay up if they want to.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 31/12/2023 18:55

A lot younger than 9 but just depends on what we’re doing. At 11 and 9 this year they won’t be because they’re back at school on 2nd and are worn out from heaps of late nights over Christmas

HippeePrincess · 31/12/2023 18:56

We always go to our friends party, kids and adults, kids are always up till midnight at any age , there’s no age limit!

Echobelly · 31/12/2023 18:56

Depends a bit - like if you're on holiday somewhere it's a big deal you might want to keep even youngish kids up if they can face it. If you're at home and it's just you, they'll probably have difficulty staying awake but if you're having a party it's easier to stay awake/harder to go to sleep!

Ours probably first were up for midnight a few years ago at my parents' holiday place when both under 10 - they didn't stay up but I think we woke them up after a few hours' sleep because there's loads of fireworks there at midnight.

They are 12 and 15 now but both like to go to bed early and it's just us and 15yos best friend tonight; we'll try and make it to midnight but no idea if we'll make it as it is hard to keep awake even for us unless you have guests I find.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 31/12/2023 18:57

We used to go to NYE parties at a neighbours house from when dd was about 7/8. There were plenty of kids so they played all night.
We are home this year (DD is 14) the way she is yawning now watching chicken run I don't think she'll be seeing 9pm let alone the new year 😂

Marblessolveeverything · 31/12/2023 18:58

Mine have pretty much always attended. They love the events, fireworks, family gathering etc. we simply have a very chill new year day.

They are now 16 and 10 so have been given jobs for the evening🤣. Youngest on coat duty eldest on keeping the mocktails coming, they love it

Spendonsend · 31/12/2023 18:59

We always celebrated with the kids from about 5 and 7.

DelurkingAJ · 31/12/2023 19:00

We stay home, eat nice food and play board games. DS2 (night owl) first made it to midnight about 5. We’re pretty strict about bedtime normally…but NYE is different.

Growlybear83 · 31/12/2023 19:00

I always let my daughter stay up from as young an age as she understood what New Year's Eve was. But she often fell asleep ages before midnight. 😆

ghostbusters · 31/12/2023 19:01

My youngest is 9. Last year was the first that both kids stayed up for the bells. They used to be v early risers but they're getting better at having a lie in so I don't mind a one-off late night.
Edit: a very closeby pub let's off fireworks at midnight, I think this factors in their decision to stay up late as we go out to watch them.

TeenLifeMum · 31/12/2023 19:01

From age 2 they would come with us to friends’ homes and there would be places to sleep or just chill or they could be with us. Lots of dc. Tonight friends are coming here and there will be 6 adults and 7 dc ages 12 and up but usually another family comes but they’re ill this year. We were usually strict re bedtimes but nye all rules are out. Always worked well for us.

WolfFoxHare · 31/12/2023 19:05

We have hosted a small party for the last couple of years and let DS stay up with some of his friends (so from age 7). Not this year as I’m really unwell so we had to cancel, and will all be going to bed early.

Hayzl · 31/12/2023 19:07

9 is a great age imo- I was about this the first time I was at a nye party and loved it!

margotrose · 31/12/2023 19:15

I always attended New Years parties with my parents - obviously as a really young baby/toddler I slept but from around 5-6 it was normal for the kids to still be awake at midnight, with a room for them to go and crash in if they wanted.

DrCoconut · 31/12/2023 19:18

Mine always have. They like a good buffet and always sleep in in the holidays anyway. This year they have ages before they go back to school too so plenty of time to gradually bring getting up and going to bed forward.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 31/12/2023 19:19

DD is 12 and wants to stay up for the first time. She has health issues / disabilities that cause extreme fatigue which is probably why she's not done so previously.

MermaidEyes · 31/12/2023 19:22

Same here when ours were younger. Kids had more energy than the adults!

Auntieobem · 31/12/2023 19:24

I can't remember our DC not being allowed to stay up until the bells.

Newuser75 · 31/12/2023 19:27

My son has stayed up for the last two years. He is 10. He is tired the next day but ok.
