Just that really? I think it's OK for DS 9 to, first time.

Thoughts?

I don't stay up - so maybe my kids do, I really don't know.

Tisfortired · 31/12/2023 19:29

Mine is 10 and will be staying up although I’d rather he didn’t. As a PP said just been through the rigmarole of Christmas and would like to enjoy a glass of champers with DP in peace before he goes back to work on Tuesday.

However my mother cared for DS1 last year on NYE as I was in hospital having DS2 and she let him stay up to see the fireworks at midnight and a precedent has been set now. He just assumed he’d be staying up and I didn’t have the heart to say no though I wish I had done now 😂

Occasional2023 · 31/12/2023 19:34

I think it depends what you have planned for tomorrow, how long till they go back to school and how likely, if they went to bed earlier they would get woken up by fireworks going off. As a kid from about age 9 we would be at neighbours house for party. All children knew that about ten minutes past midnight it would be coats and shoes on, walk home and straight into bed when you got home.

Both mine have been offered to stay up (just the 4 of us at home).
Both have declined. I'm surprised the teen has turned down the offer. Not surprised by the tween who has an internal body clock that tells him "8.30, bedtime".

ChilledToTheBone · 31/12/2023 19:47

Dcs have since age 4. Unless they don't want to.
As a kid my parents were ' nye is for adults, xmas for kids'
So I've never done that.
2 out of 4 are staying up. Youngest didn't want to, eldest is out.

Were getting take away, few games And a film

NannyGythaOgg · 31/12/2023 20:07

Altered the clocks when mine were youngsters.

Midnight was around 2 hours after their normal bed time and they were so tired and pleased it was all done and dusted.

Also given straight cava/prosecco/fizz to toast. One sip, faces pulled and left the rest.

Can't do it now. Besides the fact they aren't with me, they are both in their 40s

Not so easy now with social media

stepintochristmas1 · 31/12/2023 20:29

I do think Scottish children start earlier , I can't remember a time where I didn't stay up so I must have been young maybe p5 . I wouldn't have missed it for world , all the delicious foods and favourite aunties and uncles round . My kids maybe 7or 8 .

LostMySocks · 31/12/2023 20:33

My two (8 and 10) have just gone to sleep. I'll wake them about quarter to midnight.
They need their sleep and would be hideous if they stayed up but are old enough to want to see in the NY. Their Nanna has dimensia and I fear this is the last year she'll know who they are.

Nonamesleft1 · 31/12/2023 20:37

I’m off to bed shortly, never mind the kids 😂

YoongiMarryMe · 31/12/2023 20:40

I’ve let mine stay up since they were able to ask! We're just at home the 4 of us so no big deal. But I knew they’d fall asleep well before but they enjoyed thinking this was the year they’d make it! Was very cute. Grin

lastofthelitter · 31/12/2023 20:51

It depends on the child my 6 year old will be tired and grumpy by 8 and probably fall asleep.
My 8 year old is usually awake when we go to bed and will easily stay awake and did last year.

PickledMuffin · 31/12/2023 20:51

Thanks for the replies, it's interesting hearing how different the views are. It's just a quiet one at home. He's more of a night owl so think he will be OK.

Happy new year all ❤️

We wake them up Grin Fireworks are a big thing on NYE where we live and they would be woken up by the cacaphony anyway. So we just get them up and watch out of the window. It's lovely and they usually go back to sleep easily because they are so tired.

SparkyBlue · 31/12/2023 21:53

Mine are all up waiting for midnight. 11,8,4. Bedtime is completely out of sync anyway due to school holidays . The 4 year old remembers being outside chatting to neighbours at midnight last year so is currently planning on taking her doll and pram out for a midnight stroll lol.

We do exactly this. Our son (3) was a Nov baby and he was up with feeds his first one. Since then we just wake him up and go outside for a look. He drinks some bubble water and goes back to bed after- and so do we.

I was so knackered this year with IVF meds I had to set an alarm!

thecrispfiend · 01/01/2024 12:43

We had family over last night and My 6 year old made it to midnight for the first time, he was very pleased with himself! But now his mind is blown that the date changes at midnight he's always assumed the new day starts when he opens his eyes 🤣

doggiedude · 01/01/2024 12:46

We always had NYE parties when children were very young. They just all stayed up .Great fun .

PlaidMaid · 01/01/2024 12:47

My DD is 8 next week and stayed up for the first time this year. But not back at school until 8th - if she was back tomorrow I might have reconsidered! She is a bit grumpy today but ok.

VisiblyNot25 · 01/01/2024 12:49

My eldest are 9 and 12 and stayed up. The little one went to bed at 8. We watched a movie, played family card games etc.

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 01/01/2024 12:53

We've always included DC in Hogmanay.

If they want to go to bed they do. If they want to stay up they can.

This has been since they were little. Last night even my 6 year old nephew was still going strong at the Bells.

Vettrianofan · 01/01/2024 12:53

Next door neighbour had their four children up all through the night last night, heard them all. 2yo, 7yo, 9yo and 11yo.

Don't know how they do it. I would have been exhausted.

KThnxBye · 01/01/2024 12:54

Every year. As babies and toddlers they were out with us at house parties etc so 50/50 whether they’d be awake anyway. At 3/4 they would often try but fail to get to midnight and we had so many tears next day that we started waking them up for the new year (and/or to get them home in the early hours). They’ve all seen it as a great night to stay up late and play games with friends and family since 5/6 and they all stay up every year. Last night we were all walking home after a party at 3.30am and the youngest thought that was a great adventure

How on earth do you do it??? Are you not exhausted? Mine are always up at 6am sharp.

Busyhedgehog · 01/01/2024 13:15

DS loves the fireworks so has been staying up from age 2 onwards, I think. Never been an issue and not something I've ever worried about.
We always got to stay up as kids as well.

Taytocrisps · 01/01/2024 13:47

When we were small, we'd go to bed as normal and then my parents would wake us at about twenty minutes to midnight. We'd have a mineral and a biscuit, ring in the new year and go back to bed. I have very fond memories of linking arms with my family and singing Auld Lang Syne.

I can't remember what time DD started staying up.
