Why have my apples in the fridge gone bad overnight?

All bought two days ago. One I had yesterday was fine. Come to the fridge today to discover the bananas and apples are all brown and mushy. What’s gone so wrong overnight? Fridge is on a very cool setting. Baffled!

Bananas make other fruit ripen quicker, don't know if that's the case for apples

festivetinseling · 31/12/2023 16:43

The gas given off by the bananas would have caused the apples to become overripe, and in any case, you are not supposed to keep bananas in the fridge

Neither should be kept in the fridge. The ethylene produced by the bananas speeds up the ripening of other fruit and veg, which would be worse in an enclosed space like a fridge.

They became disillusioned with life and decided to turn to the dark side?

Or they're expressing dissatisfaction with you putting bananas in the fridge which is very very unreasonable.

Another possibility might be that your fridge is too cold, perhaps they froze for a while which would disrupt their cells and mush them.

Actually... bananas (in a bag) can be kept in a fridge. The skins blacken and look disgusting but the middles don't. And apples keep well in the fridge IME - I love a chilled pink lady.

@ErrolTheRednosedDragon If the skin has gone black, how are you supposed to know when a banana is ripened to your liking?

@Dynamoat 😂

My mum and I were saying only today that the quality of fruit and veg is deteriorating noticeably. I bought blackberries a while back and the following day they were covered in thick mould!😱
