Phone use in changing rooms

Would you ask someone to put their phone away if they were using it in an open changing room which has signs saying no devices?

I’m back swimming inside after a 9 months of cubicles at the lido and I can’t remember if I used to ask people to put phones away.

No I wouldn’t ask someone to put their phone away (unless I could see that they were photographing or videoing me which is highly unlikely). I have a poncho towel that I change under anyway so even if someone was on FaceTime and I was in the background they wouldn’t see anything.

Floofydawg · 31/12/2023 08:46

Erm what? Loads of people use their phones in my gym changing room. Unless they're taking pics/videos of people it's perfectly acceptable.

shakeitoffsis · 31/12/2023 08:48

No I wouldn't ask them to put it away

LoveAutumnColours · 31/12/2023 08:50

If it bothered me and there were signs, I’d go ask a member of staff to come talk to them.

RidingMyBike · 31/12/2023 08:57

Ours has signs up and also seems to have made sure wi-fi doesn't work in the changing rooms!

Yozzer87 · 31/12/2023 10:47

I can't remember the last time I got changed in or even saw a communal changing room. Almost everywhere has cubicles these days. Where are these places that are always debated about on MN? Most people want privacy and not to get their bits out in front of strangers.

MinnieMountain · 31/12/2023 10:48

What’s the point in having the signs up then? Surely they’re either banned (emergencies excepted) or not?

Oh, and @Yozzer87 council pools. I’m going to a different pool run by the same council at the moment. The current one only has a few cubicles but I don’t mind.

I would ask a member of staff to have a word

PuffyShirt · 31/12/2023 11:38

No. Why would it be an issue?

My gym has only 2 cubicles, so most people are changing in the open plan areas. I wouldn’t care if anyone’s chatting on their phone.

chompargh · 31/12/2023 11:39

I would say very loudly ARE YOU FILMING ME? And then when they get all angry say we'll why on EARTH have you got a phone with a camera out in a room where people are naked have some decency and respect.

They won't do it again even if they do think you're nuts.

Jibo · 31/12/2023 11:39

I only ask people to stop if they are taking photos (mirror selfies).

Decimbir · 31/12/2023 11:42

There was a girl having a video call last time I went, and there is fairly often someone sitting fully dressed at the side with their phone up in front of their faces. I think it’s really rude and shouldn’t be normalised - there are lots of videos of changing rooms online so there should be a taboo against people waving around recording devices. Very different to someone obviously checking the time or quickly responding to a text.

SabrinaThwaite · 31/12/2023 11:45

I would tell a member of staff.

Phones in public changing rooms are an issue, especially if children are around.

Booksbookbooks · 31/12/2023 11:48

Sorry but I cannot understand why people think its acceptable to have a camera on in a changing room. Of course its not ffs

StockpotSoup · 31/12/2023 12:32

I did ask someone who was having a video call to stop. She wasn’t happy, but frankly who gives a toss? Her desire to take a call immediately doesn’t trump my right to privacy.

Really? I’ve seen one pool in my life that had cubicle-only changing. Every other gym, public pool, hotel etc. I’ve ever been to has had communal changing rooms and a couple of cubicles for families.

I shall channel my peri-menopause next time and Say Something.
