New Years Eve TV

What's your memories of New Year's Eve/Day tv ?

Trying to think back, from Scotland and can only vaguely go back to the 90s. Remember Scotch and Wry, Only an Excuse, chewing the fat. My mind is blank after that. Was New Year day soap specials? Or was it Only fools etc.

What do you remember from any year?

Way before that it was a ceilidh and then the telly shut down for the night and we dragged the record player out. When we finally got a video player we dragged out the Billy Connelly tapes.

Noneofourbusiness · 30/12/2023 23:57

@Thursa what time did the telly go off at?
Did people have ceilidh in there houses?

Aww Billy Connelly. I think of him everytime I put my wellies on 🤣

I remember around 1988, being 14 and watching Julian Clary, then the Incredible Shrinking Man. Fancied the fella from that even though he was probably dead by then! 😂❤️

Noneofourbusiness · 31/12/2023 01:09

@LegArmpits did Julian have his own show at NY? I've never heard of the incredible shrinking man, will Google. In 1988 I was 7 don't think I have any memories except ladies getting a snowball and someone turning up after the bells with a lump of coal.

I do remember visiting a lot of houses in one night and people singing songs.

I’m not exactly sure. I think shortly after the bells.

My mum used to have a table heaving with food by midnight for first footers. The streets were full of people going from house to house with a carry out to give everyone a dram.

I haven’t been home much for Hogmanay, last time would be 5/6 years ago. Shortly after midnight I opened the door and silence. Changed days, huh

Noneofourbusiness · 31/12/2023 01:21

Aww sounds like lovely memories.

Yeah definitely changed days.

DH has put old scotch and Wry on. Oh my days they all look so young. I thought they were 80/90 when I watched it 😂

I don't remember there being much after the live Hogmanay programme that took us over the bells... I loved Scotch & Wry, with Supercop and The Rev I M Jolly, though no doubt some of it would be questionable now.

These days I find the streets are anything but silent with fireworks going off!

I also remember not being able to get through on my mobile straight after the bells because the network was overloaded with everyone else doing that self same thing.

Noneofourbusiness · 31/12/2023 01:52

@WeegieWan oh it really is questionable Confused and he's dressed like a Canadian officer. Don't get that at all.

Are Fireworks big at NY? Love them but definitely not for animals and I think they should only be at official events. Due to the danger etc.

You have just minded me of the early 00s with my Motorola mobile and all the networks crashed at the bells 🤣

When I was a child, we could only watch our own nation/region's TV channels (England/Midlands), so it's only more recently that I've been able to discover and revel in the sheer delights of the Scottish Hogmanay TV in a big way. Such a shame that Only An Excuse has finally come to an end; and also no new tales from Jack & Victor!

Here down 'south', I used to absolutely love Clive James' End of the year show - he was a very droll, witty man, and it was a real highlight of the year. True classic!

Sugarfree23 · 31/12/2023 02:20

Scotch n wry is in this year. Can't remember what station but I bought a Radio Times for the first time in years and spotted it marked "new"

WeegieWan · 31/12/2023 13:45

@Sugarfree23 I've just looked it up - BBC Four at 9.30 tonight and going by the photo it's the one with Mark McManus as Taggart meeting Supercop.

'Ok Sterling, oot the car!' When I was a kid I never got the reference, I didn't know who Sterling Moss was, but I laughed anyway - says a lot for Ricki's delivery!

JenniferBooth · 31/12/2023 14:47

Thats TV showed the Julian Clary one recently

stepintochristmas1 · 31/12/2023 15:03

Scotland and England have their own programming at new year (thank god ).

DanFmDorking · 31/12/2023 18:46

@Sugarfree23@WeegieWan BBC4 - 9:30pm - Scotch and Wry - HOGMANAY SPECIAL 1986
Hogmanay comedy from Rikki Fulton and his team - Gregor Fisher, Juliet Cadzow, Tony Roper, Annette Staines and Barbara Dickson.

Edit: Oh sorry, your got this already.

Sugarfree23 · 31/12/2023 19:24

I thought it was a remake rather than a repeat but will be worth a watching
