How do you clean/polish school shoes?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. DS's shoes come back muddy and filthy every day. I get the mud off with a damp sponge and then sometimes polish them if they look terrible.

Is there an easier product available for black leather school shoes? By easier, I mean easier than old fashioned polish in a tin.

I've tried the kiwi black liquid stuff but the sponge applicator always comes off and it is quite messy.

Has anyone found anything else?

I only do it once every half-term. They walk through mud, play football, chuck their shoes around.

I do a proper old-fashioned polish with Kiwi, brush and cloth but no way am i bothering more often than I do for it to be messed up again just hours later.

I'm so old fashioned! Let mud dry, use stiff brush to remove and the proper polish and buff.

I learned to polish my shoes at boarding school (there was shoe inspection once a week) and polished my children's shoes every Sunday (plus in the week if necessary). I'm still in charge of the polish but now it's only my shoes /boots and those of my husband. I find polishing very therapeutic.

Brush off the mud when it dries up and then go over with a clean damp dishcloth and then some polish on an old duster, work it in, just a small dab on the toes sides and back and then a spray of water repellent or just that if they're suede.
