Any opticians about?

My DS had his eyes tested and has just got his first pair of glasses. He likes them. All good.

However, DH (took him to pick up the glasses) and I (took him for the eye test) were given conflicting advice by the optician. DH was told that DS should wear his specs for looking at the board at school, at the cinema and similar. I was told he should wear them for close concentration type tasks eg reading, painting!

Who is right? I am probably being dim but I can’t work out if he is long sighted or short sighted.

Prescription is:

Right SPH +0.50. CYL -0.25. AXIS 110
Left SPH +0.50. CYL -0.50. AXIS 75

Thank you!

  • means long sighted so is better at distance and not so clear when doing close work. Likely needs them for reading/writing rather than for looking at the board

It's a very small distance prescription (the SPH). He also has an astigmatism which is what the CYL figures are for.

'+' means long sighted. In my last post it turned + into a dot

I think both are correct advice,

He is long sighted, so they help for close up work.
The SPH in + means long sighted, if it were a - he would be near/short sighted.
It is a very mild prescription.

BUT the CYL and AXIS describe his astigmatism, which he has a bit of which the glasses will correct. Astigmatism can make objects blurry at any distance and especially bright screens in a dark room, or at night so his glasses would correct that for both seeing far and near- ie a cinema.

So he should probably wear his glasses for both cinemas and any reading whether near or far.

Yes he is slightly long sighted so needs it for close up

DS is a similar score but minus so -0.5 so needs it for the boaed

He may not need them on all the time
What age is he?

I'm surprised he even has glasses with that prescription. It's very slight

Me too. The sight and astigmatism are both mild.

Thank you very much! This is really helpful.

Yes, the prescription is very mild, but he’s been getting headaches so was recommended an eye test and then glasses to see if they would help. He’s 11.
