The Expanse - Rocinante

Karrak · 28/12/2023 23:24

Interstellar - Endurance
Blake's 7 - Liberator

Gravity - Can't remember but think it had a name identical to a real NASA craft. Explorer maybe?

Odyssey - The name of the ship in a Tom Cruise film where he and a female crew member are stationed on a planet (and swim in an infinity pool).

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 28/12/2023 23:26

Star Trek is USS Enterprise NCC 1701 and then a letter depending on persuasion. I will always love the D

Star Trek is also Voyager, Discovery and the Defiant. New to the family are the Cerritos and the Titan.

Goodness, how could I have forgotten The Liberator? I have lost all of my fandom cred...
Does Babylon 5 count? I know it's a space station, like Rama...

Was the other one in Red Dwarf 'The Bug'?

Karrak · 28/12/2023 23:46

Spaceship was your subject. I don’t suppose a station is a ship. It’s probably more black and white in space, as opposed to marine definitions on Earth. A craft that can travel through space. It’s not like the definition of a marine ship where there are uncertainties (eg oil rig, semi-submersibles - are these ships or other structures?)

Maybe change the question and include space ships and bases. Moonbase Alpha is the one I remember.

@Karrak Yup, I don't think a station is a ship, though of course it's constantly moving ... hum... I suppose geostationary orbit is the same as being built on the surface as is being at a Trojan point.
LOL, I had run out of actual "spaceship" names.

Wow, @lorien9 just looked that one up, very impressed. Many years since I attempted to read Iain M Banks' sf - and gave up because it made my brain hurt. Pretty sure it's on a bookshelf somewhere, I must try again 🙂

It’s not like the definition of a marine ship where there are uncertainties (eg oil rig, semi-submersibles - are these ships or other structures?)

Self propelled semi-subs used to be classified as ships, until about 20 years ago. They were reclassified as fixed installations in the UK EEZ.

Unless they were underway, without the assistance of tugs, at which point, they become ships again....

SinnerBoy · 29/12/2023 07:42

Iain M. Banks had some interesting ship names, I think there's a user on MN - Use of Weapons?

My favourite is Meat Fucker.

DadDadDad · 29/12/2023 08:50

@SinnerBoy - Use of Weapons was the title of one of Banks's novels, so I don't think there was a ship of that name.

But I agree that Culture ship names are great fun. There's a whole list of them here: https://theculture.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_spacecraft which reminds me that Meat Fucker was a name other Minds gave Grey Area because of its terrible crime of reading biological minds.

List of spacecraft

This is a list of spacecraft found in the Culture novels and short stories by Iain M. Banks. Most ships in this list are members of The Culture, the hybrid society featured in many of these novels. In this setting, each Culture ship, and some others, i...
