Help me Turkish Surgeons!

Former · 28/12/2023 20:34

I have been researching Turkish surgeons and looking at their patients blogs.

How do I properly research the hospital and surgeon I am contemplating?

The reviews on various platforms are 5 stars for the hospital but I am aware this can be manipulated. It's hard to find reviews for the actual surgeons unless a vlogger shows their results.

Anyone who has been and knows how to thoroughly research?

Yes especially peri belly and upper body. Since the NHS messed up my hormones with their incompetence; I haven't been losing weight with healthy diet and exercise and am extremely tired (which can only be low impact now).

Your body makes its own hormones. What did the NHS do exactly?

Not in a wheelchair, but very difficult to walk far and travelling without a companion would be a problem.

I'm not going into that traumatic debacle.

I find it hard to believe that you have suffered at the hands of the NHS yet you are thinking about going to Turkey for procedures that they would not do here as "not safe". You said above you wanted to as they will take more.

I had a tummy tuck in 2017. In Scotland with an amazing surgeon (he was instrumental in banning the dangerous breast implants). It cost £6250 and included limited liposuction (doing too much particularly alongside the tuck is dangerous).

I was part of a private Facebook group and saw so many posts from botched surgeries in Poland and Turkey. My price included a check at 1 week post op to remove the stitches from my belly button and wound cleaning. I was seen as an emergency because I had what I thought was black skin (surgeon came in from home at 2am when I phoned the ward.) Thankfully and embarrassingly it was actually black surgical marker which made the surgeon chuckle. I was seen every 2 weeks until 10 weeks post op and had a seroma drained (not an emergency, will resolve on its own but it meant that I looked 6 months pregnant).

Those on the group who went abroad were left without adequate pain relief, or antibiotics when the drain sites developed an infection- my surgeon doesn't use drains for that reason - huge seromas that not even a private surgeon here would drain as its mot their work and then the holes with black dead flesh and their surgeon wouldn't reply to their emails.

My surgeon was Dr Awf Quaba at spire murrayfield. Though I don't know if he is still operating. His son Omar works with him but if he's like his dad he will refuse to operate if your bmi is over 28. He will also write to your GP to check they don't have any concerns about the proposed surgery.

On the group there was another of his patient who had abdominal fat. His recommendation was liposuction first and then 9 months later a tummy tuck if healing went well. They did have the liposuction and then the tuck 12 months later so I'd be wary of a surgeon whether in the UK or not who is willing to do a lot of liposuction over several body areas in one operation.

If you are midlands there were lots went to CC Kat and had really good results.

OP there are some awful things said on here that are extremely rude and condescending

  • get some counselling - as if wanting cosmetic surgery is some sort of mental issue
  • just go to the gym often trotted out on here by people who think going to the gym will eventually give you the body you dream of!m

However you had me until you said you were 3-4st overweight.
If you want lipo or TT surgery in the UK or abroad then you really need to be close to your target weight as well as being fit & healthy.

I've just had TT and lipo, lost a stone prior and BMI was 21.
IT IS NOT FOR WEIGHTLOSS, it's for shape and definition

ProfessorLayton1 · 29/12/2023 14:38

I am a NHS consultant and as Pp pointed out, I deal with consequences following surgeries done in Turkey and Egypt. Please don't do it.

FastingBitchFace · 29/12/2023 14:40

OP, I know that being overweight and not liking the way you look is miserable, but if you're not able to reduce your weight with your current way of life, surely after lipo it will all come back again?

whiteshutters · 29/12/2023 14:41

@Orientalnamechange you say that it is condescending to refer to mental health BUT Bupa UK say this on their website.

"What are the alternatives to tummy tuck?Liposuction may be helpful if you’re not generally overweight and want to get rid of some fat from specific parts of your body. But a surgeon may not be able to tell you how well liposuction will work before you have it. When you have liposuction, your surgeon uses a tube to suck out any extra fat that’s under your skin.
You can have liposuction on its own, or you can have it as part of a tummy tuck procedure. Liposuction can help to change the shape of your tummy. But it only takes away unwanted fat. A tummy tuck takes away unwanted fat and skin, and can tighten up your tummy muscles.
You could have no surgery – then you’d avoid the cost, risks, pain and recovery time of surgery. Your surgeon can tell you about other alternatives to having a tummy tuck.
It may help to see a clinical psychologist to discuss:

  • how you feel about your body
  • how to feel more comfortable about how you look"

@Orientalnamechange

I saw a lady on mumsnet who had a TT and lipo to shape, (I'd prefer just lipo) she had an absolutely massive stomach and a Uk Surgeon did it. I'm nowhere near as big. Everyone in comments was saying what a great job he did and she did look great.

OP posts:
witte · 29/12/2023 15:00

Just lipo and not a TT when you're 3/4 stone overweight will create lots of loose skin.

Have you considered Wegovy?

Former · 29/12/2023 15:03

It was working full time in a sedentary position and then a long driving commute, that affected my weight even more. Despite eating healthily. I come from a culture where we eat fresh and cook from scratch. I do not like processed stuff.

Not sure why, but I would literally have to go to bed as soon as I got home as I was so absolutely exhausted. I do have hormonal issues, but surely I should feel that exhausted in my 40s. It was the kind of tiredness that makes you want to cry!

Before that I had a very physical job for up to 8 hours a day and ate a good diet and still couldn't lose my belly or loads of the weight. I couldn't do it anymore due to it making mobility deteriorate.

OP posts:
Imposter1212 · 29/12/2023 15:04

I had a massive stomach - my BMI was 23. It looked massive because there was a 3/4 finger gap in my muscles so it made my tummy look huge as the muscles couldn't contain it. Plus the overhang from my c-section.

Between the skin and fat 4lb of weight was remover according to the surgical scales. It's quite a small amount but it drastically reduced my tummy size.

If you remove too much fat via liposuction you'll most likely end up with loose skin.

At your consultation did you ask the UK surgeon if a tuck would be better? Did they check your abdominal muscles (my surgeon estimated a 3 finger gap from external examination but when he opened me up it was more like 4 finger)?

Former · 29/12/2023 15:08

@witte Hopefully they will say I don't need a TT. I have strong muscles under the fat and surgeons always say I have thick skin with good elasticity. I don't have stretch marks etc.

I have an acquaintance who grew sick and sicker to discover that she is living with one kidney after cosmetic surgery in Turkey. Absolutely baffling but it was taken during a boob job. The skill level to perform this was insane - it's not about quality of medical ability but accountability.

I find that very strange. If they took a kidney she would have a scar down below and surely she would have realised that.

Check out saragetssleeved21 on Instagram

I read this woman’s whole story and it’s horrific. She had a sleeve that went ok and then went back to Turkey and spent £14000 on a ”mummy makeover” that involved far too much surgery at once and the resistant infection she got there resulted in her losing a breast, and having a gaping hole in her abdomen and hideous scars.

Needless to say it was then up to the NHS to save her life and put her back together because the Turkish “surgeon” wasn’t interested. It’s a ridiculous waste of scarce NHS resources.

@lastchristmas80 Your precious NHS nearly killed me twice and crippled me once. Robbed me of body parts in the end. That was multiple people's incompetence too for something pretty simple to pick up; surgeons, scanners, GPS, consultants. The nurses were great though.

That's why my Polish friends fly home even just for a GO appointment as they know what a dire service it is.

Nearly killed my brother with their incompetence and did kill Auntie. Ridiculed another family member that turned up at AE. Luckily he collapsed on the spot and they found the leukaemia.

Incompetence costs them more. But bleat on about the NHS.

LOL- what’s all this NHS chat - if you don’t use the NHS - how did this happen? More so, why would one assume the aftercare was sufficient? You should like an absolute bloody chancer/lunatic.

So your family all went private too yeah? @Former
Yep sounds like it. Unless you and your peeps are the mega drain they seem to be on NHS funds. Anyone not happy with care is free to pay for better - your family included.

Maybe use your spare cash to add grab rails etc to your house - before you’re unable to move? Or were you planning to spend your cash on dodgy Turkish surgeons - then let the local council pick up the practical costs? Sure - why not - your attitude is the problem
with this country writ large.

More vile than rinsing a public health service for private cosmetic surgery aftercare? Sure thing!
