Hi wise MN hive mind,
DH and I have to look after and entertain my 9 yr old niece in and around Exeter on Sunday 31st, all afternoon until early evening.
The weather is forecast to be very bad, which rules out a lot of outdoor things.
We have a car and will drive a bit further afield if needed.

I think she is a bit old for soft play centres.
I don't want to go swimming.
So far my only other idea is cinema (need to check what is on and when).

Please - has anyone got ideas?

What’s on at the Museum? (Royal Albert Memorial Museum) There’s usually something good on but if she hasn’t been before then it’s interesting anyway and free. The tunnels are great if you don’t mind small ish spaces. There is clip and climb if that’s her thing. Im sure there’s lots more but my mind has gone blank.

tealandteal · 28/12/2023 20:18

Oh there may be a play or panto on at Barnfield/Northcott.

Fellatfirsthurdle · 28/12/2023 20:23

Clip and climb at haven banks? Bowling near ex bridges? Museum of its open. Anything on at phoenix centre/ theatre/ corn exchange? National trust killerton (a drive from the city)? Exmouth seafront (I think there's a complex there these days)?

Yes the museum is a good idea. We have been once before but it is worth going again.
DH and I are not from the area (forgot to say) so I will look up the suggestions - many thanks.

What is the tunnels?

The tunnels are a series of underground passages under Exeter, you can go down and they show you round some of them, very exciting for kids to wear a hard hat(or the ones I see anyway) and explore under the city.

Bowling or cinema, then get some food/cake & hot chocolate somewhere. Is she from Exeter? I’d ask what she likes doing then. The museum is good (and free), but if local, she’s probably been a million times.

LargerThanAHobbit · 28/12/2023 20:41

Yes she is from Exeter.
We could spend 45 mins in a cafe, but it would be a difficult to stretch it to an hour or more.
Bowling sounds fun.

Exeter Christmas Selfieland is having a kid friendly NYE disco.

nicelunch · 28/12/2023 20:59

What about the lights at powderham castle? Not sure if it's still on then

WonderingWanda · 28/12/2023 21:08

In Exeter you could go to the cinema axe throwing at The Celtic Tossers down by Exeter St Thomas Station, bowling or clip and Climb at the Quay, an escape room -Prodigy Escapes near Belmont Park is great, go for Waffles at Kaspars.

If you'd consider driving, the Panto at the Princess Theatre in Torquay was good this year.

crumblingschools · 28/12/2023 21:14

Are there any shows on at the Barnfield or Northcott theatres?

LargerThanAHobbit · 28/12/2023 21:42

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I will look them up.

Have a look at escape rooms. We're doing the ones in the guidhall on nye. Taking 6 kids ranging from 8-12 years

Madcats · 28/12/2023 21:59

Meatballs at IKEA (having bought coathangers and soft toys)?

When teen and I went to see Wonka at the cinema this week there were a fair number of under 10's. I quite enjoyed it, but happened to be around in a few areas when they were filming.

Both of the above could take up 2 hours+

cringingatchristmas · 28/12/2023 22:19

Clip and Climb (fun indoor climbing)
Bowling
Cinema (Vue or Odeon in town)
Christmas Lights at Powderham Castle (from about 4:00-4:30pm is dark enough - you can spend a couple of hours there but it is mainly outdoors)
Swimming at St Sidwells Point
Paignton Zoo (could add a visit to Torquay Bay of Lights)
