Why doesn't lamb gravy exist?

KievLoverTwo · 28/12/2023 02:09

I can understand pork, there's not much to get out of it. But lamb is juicy and delicious. So, why can't you buy it?

Clearly, I have never tried to make gravy from it. I did try with chicken bones once, that didn't turn out well. I was only trying to make stock and it was revolting.

I'm not going to report you. If you post in a forum you need to expect all kinds of replies. Because that's how it works. Be clear with important info, don't drip feed or expect anyone to know your imaginary rules for how to reply that exist only in your head. No one is going to read all the previous replies, again, that's not how it works. You did not say you couldn't. Full stop. That's on you.

That's one explanation.

The alternative view is that people looking to give advice or voice their opinions are more considerate and try to at least read the OP's replies, which is pretty easy to do on here with one button click that filters out only what they have said. I have seen many vicious replies or terrible advice on my short time on MN that could have easily been avoided if the people responding had made the effort to spend a bit more time getting the full picture.

More often than not, if there's something horrible going on in your life, you don't want to give full disclosure in a post. It's tiresome and emotionally draining.

However, thank you for your opinions, and for not reporting the post.

If it results in some delicious gravy, I will bump the thread.

No fancy delivery services here, but will ask the butcher at my next visit. Unfortunately, we often get stuck behind cows for our local farm shop, which adds another half hour to the journey. But I may put a call into them, because they will do bulk deliveries.

Thanks :)

You won't be saying that when I bump the thread with a video of me heating up delicious lamb gravy in my birthday suit.

That's the Just Stop Beef protesters.

Lol. It's usually a farmer. Last time it was a young chap in a tractor and he was really bloody angry at the very unruly cows.

His mistake was not having a dog and agreeing to do the job on his own.

Probs a newb :)

Morrisons lamb gravy granules (shudder, the horror 😉) are actually lamb and mint, and are fucking lovely. I have a jar in my cupboard and had some on leftover Christmas dinner yesterday. Yes I know you should have homemade turkey gravy for turkey, but I am shit at making gravy and I like the lamb and mint one.

You're right though, it's not as common as chicken and beef gravy and it should be. I have no health conditions (apart from psychiatric ones) but still can't make gravy, have tried various methods, even had my sister stand next to me talking me through the process, but somehow I always balls it up. I like gravy granules and I stand by them 😁

OP, I know you said you were disabled, but just an idea for you that might work:

Get a lamb stock pot or cube. Follow instructions re: water and add a spoon of cornflour.

My husband is physically disabled and we do this for gravy every time.

Saves a load of money too and is really easy.

Also have you considered online shopping deliveries?

Tilllly · 28/12/2023 06:39

mondaytosunday · 28/12/2023 02:47

Yes it is common. Even I have a jar and I don't even like gravy!

You don't like gravy?!

What?!

Am reporting your post 😉

I have tried stock pots once or twice, and found the taste to not be very nice, they used to be very salty. I was probably cooking a chicken risotto. But this was maybe three years ago, so not a recent experience.

Along with the disability I am also cursed with a terrible electric cooker. It can't be changed because of my location. It makes controlling the hob really hard. A lot of standing up and supervising in front of the cooker, moving pans on and off.

However, we have a better cooker arriving next week (a range, which has more hob oomph than the 60cm ceramic electric).

I would love it if you could give me a few more details, please.

I have a cousin who smothers every meal with Heinz tomato ketchup. Including roast dinners.

We no longer speak.

Turkey is crap and your culinary decision was correct.

Could be. But he was a pretty hardcore coke user when I last knew him. Anger issues off the charts that I have never seen before or since. And I am not young.

Do drugs wreck taste buds? Probably.

I used to quite like Heinz, but then I bought some posh balsamic based ketchup from TK Maxx, and now Heinz tastes revoltingly sugary to me. Their awful price increases over the last two years helps to not endear me to them.

Ours is split.

I spent most of my life in the SE of England but want gravy on everything. Always have. Mum made amazing gravy.

My partner is a Yorkshireman who often pours 1/3rd of the amount I do, and it leaves me disappointed in him. Sometimes he will happily go without.

Turns out my ancestors are from Yorkshire and his are from Lancashire.

@KievLoverTwo did you know you can get reduced salt stock now? Tastes much better.

As for more info, what did you want to know?

It's simple, just make stock according to that type's instructions.

Then add cornflour to cold water, and add a little bit of that mixture to the stock mixture until you have the consistency desired.

We use that method all the time as we're coeliac and granules are so bloody expensive because they have to be specialist.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/12/2023 09:10

I do sometimes wonder if I would get better luck doing online orders a week or two in advance. Certainly if you look three or four days ahead, they never seem to have half of what you want.

Ordering in advance doesn't reserve items - you get what they have on the shelf on the day of your delivery, whether you ordered it the previous day or a month ago.

Lamb gravy is easy to make from the juices left from the roast. I have never bought ready made gravy, didn't realise it was a thing. I use what is left in the roasting tin, the vegetable water, a lamb stockpot (knorr), worcester sauce, red wine, cornflour.

You didn't realise it was a thing ?
Never heard of Bisto then🙄
