Why does Father Ted Xmas Special have a content warning??!

Watched it last night and couldn't work out what I was supposed to be getting offended by. (Mrs Doyle falling off the windowsill is still one of the greatest comedy moments btw.)

I love Father Ted. Does anyone smoke in that episode? That seems to trigger a warning now.

AnImaginaryCat · 27/12/2023 22:35

Lady's underware?

FatherJoseFernandez · 27/12/2023 22:36

God I love Father Ted’s Christmas! It’s not Christmas until I’ve seen that special and the Bottom Christmas special. The content warning could be anything in this day and age- smoking, saying feck!🤦🏽‍♀️ Maybe I like the misery!

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 27/12/2023 22:39

No idea. Really love father Ted though.

Lotrehin · 27/12/2023 22:41

It can't be the underwear - we have nuddy dating shows now!

I can't remember if someone smoked. I watched a Noel Coward play afterwards (yes I am quite the cultural behemoth) and everyone was smoking on that with no warning beforehand. Different channel though so maybe different rules.

Because it is funny?

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/12/2023 22:42

I think there's an allusion to CSA in the Catholic Church in that one.

Lady's underware?

Aka underwear!!

😀

thenightsky · 27/12/2023 22:45

The Father Ted Xmas episode never gets old for me. I laugh like a drain every time.

Disasterclass · 27/12/2023 22:46

I'm pretty sure Ted smokes in that episode.

Although if they didn't explain what the content warning was for, surely it's a waste of time?

Itsbeginningtolookalotlike · 27/12/2023 22:49

Missing the point but is it on a streaming service somewhere?

All of them are on the channel 4 streaming service.

There was a thread about this a year ago!

There were a couple of suggestions, but nothing really concrete.

Sadly, I think the most likely thing is the fact that Glinner's name is in the credits, and they want to pander to those who favour ad hominem hatred rather than taking any kind of genuine offence.

On the contrary, they were crystal clear about what their objection was - they very explicitly shouted "Down with this sort of thing!" Grin

Yes the Church does come across quite badly. I wondered if it was that. But surely a savage side-reference isn't as bad as what the church was actually up to!!?

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper nice username! Sorry, I didn't see that other thread. They showed a few episodes last night and none of the others had warnings so it's not Glinner per se.

Must be the smoking then.

How lame.

Careful now

TheIsleOfTheLost · 27/12/2023 23:08

Ahhhh I had to go find it on youtube. Definitely one of the best scenes in the history of comedy.

Ah go on.

Lotrehin · 27/12/2023 23:11

@TheIsleOfTheLost haha glad you enjoyed it. It's all in the build-up.

Last night Channel 5 broadcast several 'mild violence and bad language' warnings during Ronnie Corbett's 30 Best Moments, so I'm not really surprised by this. World's gone mad.

Lotrehin · 27/12/2023 23:13

Maybe they thought the violence was TOO mild for the average Channel 5 viewer!

No, I didn't remember it at all - I searched online for any clues and the first thread that came up was last year's MN thread!

Ah, so it's not Glinner himself, then. Interesting.

Even so, I bet they would warn about the mildest potentially objectionable thing that they wouldn't otherwise think twice about, to pre-empt the 'certain groups' who would seize on any old thing and use it as an excuse to complain because they hate Glinner and what he stands for.

NashvilleQueen · 27/12/2023 23:25

It's the golden cleric one with Fr Todd Unctuous isn't it? Mrs D says Hiroshima as one of her name guesses. Not sure that's enough tho.

NashvilleQueen · 27/12/2023 23:26

Is it Bishop Brennan in a sort of harem when he speaks to Ted on the phone? Seem to remember dancing girls and drink etc going on in the background.

Ridiculous, isn't it? They're all up there together, aren't they: Quentin Tarantino, Irvine Welsh, Ronnie Corbett...

I highly doubt that the RC programme will be a magnet for young viewers, anyway - it will be those of us of a certain age, who are fully aware of what The Two Ronnies was all about, watching it for nostalgia purposes (I still have it on my catch-up list!).
