What is the worst accident you’ve had?

Thought this would be interesting to read peoples stories.

All mine have generally involved sharp objects. Knives, graters, rocks!

I think the worst was walking in Spain across a very sharp and rocky rocks when I tripped (wasn’t clever enough to be wearing shoes, I was on the beach before I decided to walk), I proceeded to slice the top of my big toe off on the rock. With toe flapping and blood dripping I somehow had to hop to get back and have top of my toe reattached. That wasn’t much fun.

Slipped on wet floor at work and dislocated shoulder……12 hours before they put it back in 🤢

TigerRag · 27/12/2023 19:54

I've fallen through the gap between the train and platform that they advise you to avoid where I broke my ribs. So painful

HeddaGarbled · 27/12/2023 19:54

Sprained my ankle in Spalding. I don’t have a very exciting life (which can be a blessing).

Rockfordpeach · 27/12/2023 19:56

Mine was tripping off the kerb and breaking my elbow earlier this year.

DP was running in the parents sports day race, stumbled and put his foot out to steady himself, the shock travelled up his leg and snapped his femur. Was off work for 18 months, numerous surgeries for non union of the bones and an undetected broken wrist that ended up needing surgery a few months down.

Comedycook · 27/12/2023 19:57

I sliced the top of my finger off...just a thin sliver with the nail attached...was chopping a salad and misjudged. Oh dear lord, the pain was hideous...I even saw the tip of my finger on the chopping board. It's healed now but the tip still feels a bit numb.

christmaspawpaws · 27/12/2023 20:00

Slipped at the top of some stairs and then fell down 2 flights, landed at the bottom sat on my ankle which was then facing the wrong direction
I dislocated my shoulder (grabbing at the handrail) and broke my ankle and foot and tore the ligaments

For an I don't know what I did accident, I herniated a disc so badly I needed emergency spinal surgery for cauda equina

Mumaway · 27/12/2023 20:01

Whipped my top off when DP suggested a quickie and dislocated my shoulder. Luckily he knew how to pop it straight back. Bit of a mood killer though😆

DyslexicPoster · 27/12/2023 20:02

cut through my nail with scissors blurgh then almost fainted.

dh had a accident in fork lift where it almost crushed him. There was talk about air ambulance but by some miracle dispute a high fall and the forklift falling on top of him, zero serious damage done. He went home that night after being blue lighted 40 miles into London. I think he had a month or two off work. Then work asked him if he did it on purpose!

Maybe out trigger warning some have ptsd from accidents

PuttingDownRoots · 27/12/2023 20:03

Got my foot caught in a 13ft fence and fell backwards off it, leaving me hanging by my leg. Dislocated knee.
Which then got further damage when the ambulance crew secured me to the stretcher with a strap cross the knees....

Schoolrefusa · 27/12/2023 20:06

I was thrown around a car as it rolled down a hill as a child (I didn't have a seat belt on ) . I think physically my most painful was being kicked by a horse though as still have a large dent in my leg .

Gulbekian · 27/12/2023 20:09

As a child of about eight, I was running along a road at full speed with my hands in my pockets and fell face first into a pile of building rubble that included a broken window. I pretty much ended up with a completely shredded face but with no eye or tooth damage and no broken bones. Amazingly, I have virtually no scars from it: my grandmother and her upstairs neighbour were both midwives and they convinced my parents (once my mother had come round from fainting when she first saw me 😂) to let them manage the cuts rather than take me to hospital and have them stitched (we're talking the 1970s here).

BreakfastGold · 27/12/2023 20:13

I fell badly on some rough loose gravel walking in Beijing and sliced my knee open. It wasn't that serious an injury by the standards of some here but I was travelling alone and independently, no holiday company. It needed stitching but I couldn't face navigating Chinese a&e, insurance claim etc. Made my way back to the hotel on the underground with blood running down my leg and lots of concerned Chinese commuters offering tissues. Ended up wrapping it in a towel but still soaked the hotel sheets in blood overnight.

RenoDakota · 27/12/2023 20:16

Fell over on a guided gorge walk in Crete in May and broke my wrist.

You don’t think it’s obvious from the title?

I was around 5 when my sister gave a ‘backie’ on her bike. My trousers got caught in the spokes and they pulled my leg in, I had a large chunk of skin and flesh torn off the bone. What was left couldn’t be sewn together and I had to have wet to dry bandages, I still remember the pain of having the dry bandages torn off my wound.

elm26 · 27/12/2023 20:24

On honeymoon in Jamaica, I opened the mini bar and a glass bottle of red stripe fell out, the glass shattered and a shard bounced up and sliced through my finger to the bone.

I was stitched up by the lovely on site Jamaican dr who had no local anaesthetic and asked me if I'd like a shot of "bob marley" (over proof rum) before I have the stitches, I declined but wished I did 😂 I still have no feeling in the entire finger 9 years later.

So much blood had splattered the walls and floors that they sent maids in to clean our room 🤦🏻‍♀️

At the age of 42, skiing in the French Alps I was hit in the back. The impact twisted my spine & tore a vertebral artery in my neck (there are 4 that feed the brain with oxygen).

The tear caused a bleed in the brain and I suffered a stroke.

The week before the accident I’d run a half marathon.

After this freak accident (and a month in a French hospital) I couldn’t walk for 4 months (I completely lost the use of my right side). I had intensive physio to retrain in the brain so I could walk. 8 months later I was discharged and back to normal.

12 months later I was skiing again.

Moral of the story…. Life is short and you never know what’s round the corner. Live life to the full 🤜

FFS. Take the thread title as your trigger warning 🤷‍♀️

idontlikealdi · 27/12/2023 20:32

I've got a long list...

Most painful was slipping on ice and landing sideways onto a cast iron fence. Broke five ribs.

Most dramatic a horse fall where I split my forehead open and needed 15 stitches.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/12/2023 20:33

Fell out of a hay barn when I was 11 and shattered my right shoulder.

Car accident when I was 16 and ended up with glass embedded in my arm and scalp.

Fell off the side of the bath and landed directly on my knee cap in the concrete floor. My knee swelled up like a grapefruit and I couldn't bend it for weeks.

eandz13 · 27/12/2023 20:34

I slammed my car door on my hand in a rush, broke a bunch of my knuckles and finger bones and whatnot but also degloved 2 fingers instinctively yanking my hand away. That was pretty grim!

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/12/2023 20:35

Erk. Degloving injuries. 🤢

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2023 20:38

Hoping the end of a skipping rope on pack holiday with Brownies. First time ever away from
Home. I broke my ankle. No idea how.
Today, bashed my self on the lip with my phone. I was unbelievably painful!!

Yes - I had an accident at work that left me unable to walk for months. A year later I could walk, two years later and I can run again. I will never take for granted my health and the ability to use a toilet and take a shower on my own.
