What is the worst accident you’ve had?

Thought this would be interesting to read peoples stories.

All mine have generally involved sharp objects. Knives, graters, rocks!

I think the worst was walking in Spain across a very sharp and rocky rocks when I tripped (wasn’t clever enough to be wearing shoes, I was on the beach before I decided to walk), I proceeded to slice the top of my big toe off on the rock. With toe flapping and blood dripping I somehow had to hop to get back and have top of my toe reattached. That wasn’t much fun.

I think my worst was getting bitten by the cat. He got his leg stuck through some slatted shelving and immediately assumed the shelf was eating him. I panicked that he was going to break his own leg trying to get out, and reached in to save him with bare hands, which he naturally sank his teeth into. Should have seen that coming! However, while biting me he was fairly distracted so DH managed to free him from the shelf.

His canine tooth went clean through my fingernail, another went in between my finger bones into the knuckle. The infection in my hands was so bad I couldn’t dress myself or pop tablets out of the blister packs. I had to navigate my phone with the tip of my little finger to call work and tell them I couldn’t come in as I couldn’t type!

Lost my footing getting out the bath, stumbled forward and sliced my little toe off on a gap in the plastic washing basket 😱

Eyesopenwideawake · 27/12/2023 22:13

Trying to cut frozen Raclette and sliced the top of my thumb down to the bone. Wrapped it in a tea-towel and drove to hospital where they stitched it up pronto. Got home, starving and thinking only that the cheese would now be defrosted. Bloody dogs had scoffed the lot 😭

Sprained my ankle on the final obstacle of an inflatable 5k course. Went down the slide, tried to move as I thought I was about to hit someone at the bottom, rolled my ankle and somehow ended up with my foot under me. Heard something go pop. Took 6 months to be right again. Also pinched a nerve in my left shoulder somehow a day or so later, which lasted about a week, so I had a useless right ankle and useless left arm. Goodness I was a sorry state of affairs.

Bruised ribs a few months back - I'm a figure skater and caught the toe pick of my skate attempting a skill, landed on my stomach. Ouch.

About 5 years ago, same thing happened but I landed on my left shoulder. Ouch. No damage but the muscles occasionally tighten and cause pain there now.

The ankle ruined a major skating competition, and I had to hobble through a Florida holiday 28 days later. In hindsight, I should've got a wheelchair in the parks as the walking probably set my recovery back by a month or two.

I was thrown off a 16 hand high cantering horse who took exception to something and bucked, sending me so high in the air that I did a complete spin before my shoulder met the ground. Dislocated my subacromial joint (the bit where your collarbone meets the top of your shoulder). Had my 10 year old with me so had to remain Very Brave and refuse IV analgesia at hospital as it would have potentially made me incapable of looking after her.

It could have been worse -- (I could landed on my neck, for example, RIP Christopher Reeve) but 3 months later, to the day, I sledged at speed into a tree. I felt the bone in my leg bow and snap. Dislocated my foot, had to have it pulled straight 4 times (under "laughing gas", I wasn't laughing) to make sureit was straight enough to allow enough blood supply to get through to the foot to allow them to wait until the following morning to take me to theatre.

Again, could have been worse - I could have been headfirst on the sledge.

But combine the two -- I was non-weight-bearing on crutches for 9 weeks on a shoulder that hadn't yet healed from a major injury - every time I put weight through my shoulder I felt that the joint was being torn apart.

20+years on, my ankle is great. My shoulder however has never been right since. I don't sledge or ride horses any more.

Breaking my right breaking my leg in 3 places and dislocation facing rightwards whole rock climbing.

Told I would never run again...proved them wrong ..

This:

Don't.

On holiday in Wales, we went to a beer festival in the town. Went back to the cottage we were staying at, and it was pouring with rain. The garden was very secluded, I was very drunk, and decided it would be a good idea to 'Dance (almost) Naked in the Rain' Slipped on the wet grass, and landed with my face on the stone lawn edging. 40 mile ambulance ride to hospital,10 stitches in my right cheek, and 2 glorious black eyes, with a 40 mile taxi ride back. (By the way, I was, at the time, a 60year old Granny!)

I'm sorry you got hurt, but you sound like an awesome person!

Zandrazanzara · 27/12/2023 22:16

I also have fallen between the train and the platform and was saved from snapping my lower leg by my very thick leather boots! I was very bruised though.

jasjas3008 · 27/12/2023 22:17

Broke hip and femur, bike crash, had to walk out using the bike as a crutch before i got phone signal.

Fortunately, hip break was in in the joint so no operation.

SkyBlueBoy · 27/12/2023 22:18

Tripped over a football at cub camp when very young. Double fracture in my right arm. Most painful thing I've done!

Last year, playing football ( noticing a theme here ) with the kids I coach, tore my Achilles which stopped me doing any sport for 6 months. It was a very useful lesson for them, make sure you always warm up before you play any sport 🤦🏻‍♂️

Parapapampam · 27/12/2023 22:19

Two kitchen ones.

Stupidly tried to unblock blades of a hand held blender whilst it was still plugged in, blended the tip of my finger rather nicely.

Knocked a just out of the oven casserole dish off the side and caught it with bare hands.

Bettalife · 27/12/2023 22:21

On honeymoon admiring the view as we took a shortcut to the marina. Didn’t see the open man hole cover, foot went straight down and flip flop flew off as I impaled the bottom of my foot on an upright pipe. A passerby took me to hospital with my new (and now ex) husband riding on the back of his pick up. Thankfully no bones broken, but managed to rupture my plantar fascia and it was a bit of a mess. I was laid up off my feet for the last few days of our tropical holiday. And came back to the UK in a wheelchair.

Broke my ankle at rugby training. Thought it was just sprained so walked back across the field to the changing rooms. Turned out it needed a plate and several screws.

USaYwHatNow · 27/12/2023 22:22

I have nothing to add, but it appears horses are a running theme here...🤣🫣

Woahyeahyeahyeah · 27/12/2023 22:25

Outing but I poured freshly boiled kettle water over my forearm instead of in my cup. First week at home with a newborn, it was 3am and I hadn't slept a wink for days! All I wanted was a Coffee - ended up having to go to the GPs Nurse everyday for 4 weeks (with newborn!) to have the dressing changed Confused

Crispynoodle · 27/12/2023 22:29

Out viewing a house missed one step on the inner courtyard patio, on the way down my arm bashed off the corner of the boiler house wall. Spiral fractured mid shaft humerus. After 7 months of non healing they finally operated!

pontipinemum · 27/12/2023 22:31

Outnumberedbywillies · 27/12/2023 22:03

Spilt a whole kettle of boiling water over me whilst filling up a hot water bottle and ended up with third degree burns and skin grafts from my chest down to my ankle and over a month in a burns unit. Never experienced anything more painful than the daily bandage changes.

When I was 12 the shower head came off and an gush of boiling hot water came out. I had to get the bandages changed daily as well. It was so so painful

gamerchick · 27/12/2023 22:31

When I was 10 I fell whilst running up a flight of stairs holding a glass jar full of grasshoppers I’d collected to pour onto my brother’s head

That would have been fun if it had panned out.

TheUltima · 27/12/2023 22:33

Not me, but I always remember someone on here saying they trod on a frog, slipped and broke their ankle

BaffledOnceAgain · 27/12/2023 22:35

bumtrumpet · 27/12/2023 21:25

A full jar of peanut butter fell out the cupboard. I had my hands full so attempted to break its fall with my foot. It just broke my toe instead.

I did this with a jar of jam on the top shelf of an integrated fridge. My son announced at Minors that I'd "Tried to break its fall and done a David Beckham metatarsal!"

pontipinemum · 27/12/2023 22:35

TigerRag · 27/12/2023 19:54

I've fallen through the gap between the train and platform that they advise you to avoid where I broke my ribs. So painful

😮 that must have been so scary! How do they get you out?

Brightonhome · 27/12/2023 22:39

As an art student I was nailing a piece of artwork to the floor to spray it. Couldn't find a hammer so I used a wooden clog. Clog picked up nail head and I drove the nail through the side of my finger into the floor. Nail had a wide head so I couldn't pull my finger off. I was literally nailed to the floor. Cried until a flatmate came home. She thought I was joking. Had to go next door for pliers and a nice man released me from my torment. Then I had to go to hospital for a tetanus injection. That needle was bloody huge. Not a good day. I laugh now though.

ALongHardWinter · 27/12/2023 22:40

imnotwhoyouthinkiam I've never heard of,much less met, anyone who's had to have their tongue stitched!

LaughingCat · 27/12/2023 22:42

@Gliblet - have you been tested. No, seriously…have you been tested? 😂😂😂.

Also, chickens are evil little bastards. Little beady eyes and vicious beaks. They’re always the ones to start trouble.

What is the worst accident you’ve had?
jennytheonionslayer · 27/12/2023 22:49

Had an accident in the gym, broke my back in two places and two ribs too, I was launched 4ft in the air and landed on concrete.

Had a brief stint in a wheelchair but ok now a few years later, I got lucky.

Daisy95 · 27/12/2023 22:50

I've had a few,

When I was ten I slipped off my brothers bunk bed straight onto his toy pirate ship where unfortunately the mast damaged my vagina, ive honestly never felt pain like it, had to have surgery to repair it.

I broke my foot and ankle falling down the last two steps at home.

Broke all my fingers in my left hand after trying to take the whisk blades of my electric whisk whilst it was still plugged in.

Broken my nose 3 times, once my at school when my ex boyfriend chucked a rugby ball at my face, then one drinking a cocktails directly from a jug and lastly falling over a smashing my face into a shed.

Tore my rotator cuff in my shoulder moving an operating theatre light at work. Was pretty sore and felt so embarrassed and just wanted to get through the rest of my shift but literally couldn't move that arm.

Lastly was on a swing and jumped off but forgot to let go so my body went but my arms stayed. Weirdly broke 3 ribs doing that and dislocated my left shoulder.

I also was a kid that anything that hurt me I would faint. So even hitting my funny bone would cause me to faint, so I'd often injure myself twice 😂😂
