The Brexit Benefit of the Return of Imperial Units

noblegiraffe · 27/12/2023 10:50

I regret to inform you all that imperial units will not, in fact, be returning, despite being much vaunted as a Brexit Benefit by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The reason for this is that they asked the People how they should be reintroduced and the People said 'Are you MAD?'

Still, we've got all those other Brexit Benefits to be luxuriating in, so this one is no real loss.

What a complete waste of time and money that was. I expect that many people who voted Brexit to return to imperial units are now dead.

Sourisblanche · 27/12/2023 10:57

Damn it. I was so looking forward to ordering my pint of wine! Smile

noblegiraffe · 27/12/2023 11:11

Apparently they will be introducing a pint of wine so all is not lost.

"As the first step in this review we have announced our intention to update the specified sizes that prepacked still and sparkling wine can be sold in allowing both to be sold in 500ml and 200ml sizes and introducing a new 568ml ‘pint’ quantity."

Ah money well spent

noblegiraffe · 27/12/2023 11:29

This presenter is quite confused about the 'economic boost' that will be gained from allowing pint bottles of wine.

He says that you can currently achieve a pint of wine and it's all about the glass not the bottle, unless you go for a bottle and straw combo.

Perhaps there are some on MN who do drink wine from a bottle with a straw who will be delighted?

Imperial units never went away. It has always been legal to sell in lbs and ozs - as long as the equivalent price/kilo is equally prominently displayed.

TheSmallAssassin · 27/12/2023 11:41

What a relief! Imperial units are so backward. I weaned myself off stones and feet and inches ages ago (I'm mid fifties) and I'm even slowly getting used to my running pace in minute/kms instead of miles.

DuncinToffee · 27/12/2023 11:43

The government has confirmed it is not planning to change the rules on selling in imperial measures after Brexit.

The government has now said it will not change the rules, after 98.7% of respondents to a consultation favoured using metric as the main measurement unit for sales, as now, or as the only unit.

UK already had pint size champagne botlles until 1973

Guavafish1 · 27/12/2023 11:47

Brexit is Brexit

DuncinToffee · 27/12/2023 12:06

"a pint bottle of wine" is, in fact, a unicorn horn.

sounds right

This is far too true and logical for a Brexiteer!!

Brefugee · 27/12/2023 12:37

about 3 years ago i was in a market (the Moor Market in Sheffield - it was fab) and took photos of the veg stall which does just that - all the big numbers were lbs/oz and underneath the price/kilo.

and i plastered it all over twitter - and got a lot of abuse about being a remoaner and worse for my trouble.
Even though personally Brexit has had a social and financial impact on my family (that i have not moaned about because, well, meh)

SabrinaThwaite · 27/12/2023 12:44

I just need a straw to go with it.

Good news and I do hope there’s going to be a crown print on my pint glass for completeness Grin

notprincehamlet · 27/12/2023 13:04

Rees-Mogg won't be happy until the country's reduced to a medieval theme park. How did a man who couldn't find his own arse with both hands get to wield so much power? O yeah, inherited wealth and privilege. If ever there was a case for 100% inheritance tax he's it.

ticketstickets · 27/12/2023 13:10

The seriously ridiculousnous of crossing the border into the UK and suddenly my satnav changes from metres and km to feet and miles.

Umm, I am still the same person driving!!! Stop confusing me.

noblegiraffe · 27/12/2023 13:33

Is that to Northern Ireland?

How do they deal with distances, does 80 on one side of the border become 50 on the other?

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 27/12/2023 13:53

@notprincehamlet Is medieval a bit modern for Mr Rees-Mogg?

Focalpoint · 27/12/2023 14:59

@noblegiraffe it is an absolute pain in the arse. ROI has speed limits and cars with speedometer in kph. You drive across the border and speed limit changes from 120kph to 70 mph. Old fashioned car used to have dials with both measurements but these seemed to have been phased out,
So You have to do the mental arithmetic as you are driving along or just learn that 70 is 112, 60 is 96 etc.

My new electric car recognises the sign post says 70 but assumes it is kph and then thinks im speeding and gives me all kinds of crazy warnings so i have to pull over and reset the units which is buried deep in the menu options.

Car manufacturers don't seem to realise there are people who drive a metric/imperial border on a daily basis!

Never mind having to have a pound purse and a euro purse although tech is making that easier unlike what is happening with cars and their safety systems!

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 27/12/2023 15:09

Wow, that's a better result in favour of sense than I'd expected!

Though aren't you even a little bit sorry you don't have to ensure your pupils can work in bases other than 10 for everyday mathematics, @noblegiraffe ?

IWFH · 27/12/2023 15:30

I have no words for the fucking stupidity of the morons in the Tory Party.
NOBODY anywhere needs or wants pint bottles of wine (although I expect that one of the Tory parasites like Mone will have already got a contract to produce pint sized bottles to the wrong spec.)
Personally I don't give a flying fuck if pints of wine were available in 1973. As a reminder corporal punishment was still allowed in schools in 1973 and the Austin Allegro was introduced that year... Well that's a recommendation.
But I expect that stupid twat Rees-Mogg will herald this as a great benefit of Brexit. Fiddling while Rome burns anyone? Talk about led by donkeys.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 27/12/2023 15:41

I think most people would feel shortchanged by a pint bottle of wine instead of the standard 70 or 75cl size.

Can you imagine if it had been 52:48! Glad to see that the consultation attracted such a number of responses too, I'd like to think a lot of them were unprintable.

We used to teach imperial units when I first started teaching, it was bloody awful. Then we'd do a lesson on metric and the kids would go 'wow, this is much better'.
