It's 1 minute past midnight on Boxing Day night and the awful On The Beach holiday ad has started playing. The one with the gross vulgar fat family and their repulsive ice cream stealing children. Christmas is over, vacation season/ Easter is upon us!!

Anyone else?

Oh Christ, the Jane Plan ads are coming, aren't they 😫

Dunno if it was Jane but yes, they'll be back.

What annoys me is that it's STILL the Christmas holiday but already companies are laying on the guilt - you ate too much, you drank too much, now suffer for it.

(And I'll tell you another annoyance - Back To School ads when the summer holidays have barely started. It's as if kids can't be allowed to enjoy anything and kick back for a bit. And I don't even have children 😃)

And breathe.

Wow vulgar and fat?
Guess your family is just perfect

Yep I found the "vulgar and fat" a bit much too.

ohfook · 27/12/2023 13:23

When you have no more leftovers and nice food left to just give the kids a picky lunch or tea and you have to go back to actual cooking again.

I'd rather be vulgar and fat than a crashing snob. It's much more fun.

To be fair, the arsehole families on AI holidays always are though.

You see them and the "arsehole radar" goes into overdrive.

Christmas is a Christian festival To millions in the UK of other faiths and none, it's not though. It's a present giving, food eating, time with the family. It might have started off as a christian celebration but it's not any more for a lot of people.

Strictly speaking, it has two origins - the pagan Midwinter festival celebrated by Northern European countries with cold, dark winters, which merged into the Christian one.
There’s a good reason why Christmas is not such a Big Thing in warmer, southern European countries.

Incidentally in Sweden they still call Christmas Jul (Yule) which is a pre Christian term.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 27/12/2023 14:19

Yes, obviously the timing is because of midwinter celebrations in the northern hemisphere (saturnalia, Yule, solstice in general), the Christians co-opted the timing as there's nothing about the time of year in the Bible accounts.

Maybe it's over when you notice that maybe the days are getting longer?Grin

The moaning about unwanted presents starts.

I like the holiday ad. Holidays are the most wonderful time of the year.

Facing40andfrazzled · 27/12/2023 14:45

The ad with the family from hell as my husband calls them …they are so obnoxious and crass .. certainly would not encourage me to book a holiday with that company

Alighttouchonthetiller · 27/12/2023 09:23

It's not a '6th January obsession'....It's when Christmas actually finishes, as per the bible. It's when the three Kings arrived (if memory serves).

Although the Church celebration doesn’t officially finish until Candlemas - February 2nd - and some people are happy to keep their decorations up till then.

Not us though. I’m quite relieved to get the house back once New Year’s done.

cardibach · 27/12/2023 14:54

On timing of decorations - I normally do NYE as my granny used to say you needed to or you would ‘take the luck of the old year into the new’ but I’ve got a friend staying for NY this year so I want to leave them up to be appreciated! This year’s been pretty good so I’m prepared to risk the luck!

Trees coming down at the weekend it's irritating me now. We put up on 1st take down on 31st

NancyJoan · 27/12/2023 16:08

Today I bought some tulips, def a sign of spring for me. However, my tree’s only been up since the 20th, so still very much enjoying it every time I walk into the room.

M&S had Valentine’s sweets etc in when I was picking up the meat on the 22nd.

Don’t they just. I’d rather be “gross, vulgar and fat” than a nasty cunt tbh 😊

I love tulips, I bought some before Christmas, was surprised to see them in the shops. Also love daffodils. What's even better is both daffodils and tulips are fairly cheap to buy.

MadCatLady27 · 27/12/2023 17:05

I despise that advert as I can't stand that song I have to frantically Scrabble for the mute button - at least when it sponsored mamma Mia there was warning here those no warning just the fucking screeching starting

It also sucks when there's endless holiday ads and you can't afford to go away this year

Serene135 · 27/12/2023 18:48

When you need to start thinking about selling the cheap thoughtless rubbish that you were gifted.

I don't understand why on the beach don't use the Chris rea song with the same name for their advert

I'm just boggling slightly at the name of this company, who I'd not heard of before...I've never seen the ad but I have watched the 1959 film of the book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OntheeBeach(novel)

Blinkityblonk · 27/12/2023 21:07

The day doesn't have capital letters (Christmas Day Boxing Day, today).
