A very boring question about ottoman storage beds

If you have bought one recently, would it be possible to store a (thin) queen sized mattress inside it?

We are upgrading our very ancient IKEA bed in the January sales but need to store a queen mattress beneath it (used to make an uncomfortable sofa bed bearable for guests who stay for a month every year - it spends the rest of the year tucked under our bed as it doesn't fit anywhere else). I know most ottomans have a bar halfway across but as hoping I could sort of squish the mattress under it.

It doesn't have to be an ottoman and plan B isna normal bedframe, its just that I prefer the divan style fabric beds so this would be the ideal solution.

It wouldn't be possible in ours - it has two posts in the middle to support the slatted bit our mattress sits on.

I have a king size ottoman storage bed. The base is in two separate parts so you can get a lot in there but not another mattress unless it can be rolled/folded and vacuum packed down to a smaller size. You’re probably better off with a different bedframe and using a valance to hide it

Ours (king size) is two separate boxes clipped together with the lid the mattress sits on clipped onto the ends. So no, as the boxes touch the lid in the middle.

Most of them online have the dimensions of the storage, so you should be able to tell.

Lots have the storage divided into 2 with an actual barrier separating the 2 halves.

My DD has a double one and it really isn't that deep. She stores her tat and clothes in plastic boxes with lids. But they are quite shallow. The frame of the mattress fits inside iyswim. So the actual storage space is shallower than the sides of the bed.

Having said that, I am sure many would be able to be deep enough. But you need to look at the measurements.

I'm hoping to get myself one in the sales.

Yes, if you take out the wood that divides it into 4 storage compartments you could with ours. I took it out so we get 4 Samsonite large suitcases under it easily. Ours is king-size

Rainbowshit · 26/12/2023 13:29

No. Ours has a supporting leg in the middle.

Flubadubba · 26/12/2023 13:29

Depends- what size bed are you looking at? We would be able to in our Dusk Super King ottoman bed.

hedgehoglurker · 26/12/2023 13:30

My king size has one large open space. It has a hydraulic lift and opens from the foot end. Not sure what size mattress might fit, but it would need to be a bit shorter and narrower than the king to fit in the space. Can you get a fold up mattress instead?

Thanks, wasn't expecting so many swift supplies! This is the one I'm looking at:

Looking at the small print, it does seem that it would fit from the storage dimensions given, but the bar in the pictures is making me pause especially as I won't be able to see it in person before I buy it.

Thanks for all the advice 😊

dont think so, most of them will have posts in the middle section

elderberryink · 26/12/2023 13:32

We're looking at the double fyi. The queen mattress is 120x190 and is quite cheap and thin (but makes a world of difference to the sofa bed, which is one of those fold out types that's basically one up from a futon).

Flubadubba · 26/12/2023 13:34

@elderberryink we have that model (not double) and found the measurements relatively true.

elderberryink · 26/12/2023 13:35

Ah great, thank you Flubadubba!

In ours the dividers are part of the support for the bed.

Dibdabble · 26/12/2023 13:37

I have recently tried this (single mattress, double bed frame) and it doesn’t work as the fit is too tight length ways once the fixings for the bed are taken into account

Doggymummar · 26/12/2023 13:38

Ours weren't ours has a lip or ledge around the inside the mattress sits on.

Psychoticbreak · 26/12/2023 13:47

Mine is a king and lifts up from one end. I had been storing a king mattress topper in there till recenttly.
