Opt-out of maximum weekly working time?

My DC has been offered a consultancy internship for next summer, which is a foot in the door for a potential grad job the following year. As part of his contract he's been asked to sign an opt out of the maximum weekly working time regulations. Is this common practice?

Very common depending on positions! It's in my contract, my DHs contract and several other friends that I know of. We were literally discussing this the other day 😂

It’s very common and very underhanded imho. It should be for an average working week but employers who ask people to opt out are actually meaning it’s all week and every week. Is it unpaid too?

It's a paid internship
