DH has two huge lumps in armpit

One has just started oozing puss. Arm around it going red. He’s had a recent ear infection and before that very nasty infected wound on his thumb. Which he got ABs for. I’ve finally got him to agree to go to the GP for the armpit. He’s 41 very fit and healthy. But he’s tired and run down. Should I be worried? I have health anxiety and I’m trying not to let my mind wander.

I don’t like the sound of that. Ring 111 if you’re in UK.

We’re not in the U.K. we do have the equivalent of a walk in but he’s booked for the gp tomorrow?

Morning :) try not to worry, but it sounds like getting that infection checked out today would be wise. It could just be a boil type thing, but the redness around it needs looking at. Can you call 111 to try and get him seen today? He could just be getting more infections due to being run down. xx

Hard to say on that. Is he running a temperature? Is the redness spreading? Id outline the redness with a pen so you can see if it's growing or not.

nameychangio675 · 26/12/2023 07:28

Thank you, it’s just that there are two lumps rather than one. We’ll get it seen asap. Maybe just infected lymph node?

Get it seen ASAP, especially as the redness is expanding.

DustyLee123 · 26/12/2023 07:30

And draw a dotted line at the very edge of the redness.

MinervatheGreat · 26/12/2023 07:33

Sounds like boils.
Not uncommon in the armpits when a person is run down.
Dont panic.

nameychangio675 · 26/12/2023 07:34

Thanks will do a line now

While there ask them to run a test for diabetes a HBa1c blood test as can look at his sugars over the last 12 weeks

DustyLee123 · 26/12/2023 07:38

Let us know how you go.

Theunamedcat · 26/12/2023 07:42

Is it painful? A hot cloth might help draw it out and reduce the pressure how long till his appointment

nameychangio675 · 26/12/2023 07:44

@Theunamedcat yes very painful. He’s had his arm in a static position all day (it’s evening here)

Appointment is tomorrow at midday I’ll report back. Thank you all for helping.

I suffer sometimes with infected cysts in the same area, it hurts like a bugger. Usually they will go quite red around the site if it is infected, so he probably will need antibiotics to help him.

The only other thing I recommend is Hibiscrub (if you can get your hands on it) he can use it in bath/shower or just carefully dab on the area and leave it (keep reapplying when needed) It can help with the pain a bit. Hope he is ok.

Solymoly · 26/12/2023 07:58

Probably boils, you get them when run down but best to get looked at as may need antibiotics or lancing. I had a large carbuncle which is a boil with several heads in my armpit once which needed lancing and antibiotics

I'm not sure which way the time differences are working.
It's early morning here in the UK. If you are not seeing a GP for another 30 hours or so, I'd be keeping a very close eye on the redness, and escalating if the redness spreads further before the appointment.
If its more like 6 hours, I'm less concerned.

nameychangio675 · 27/12/2023 01:57

Gp said they are massive cysts. This morning one was just constantly weeping a foul smelling odour. He’s had them dressed and been given antibiotics as they think he has an infection somewhere. I’m still a bit in the dark though, getting DH to repeat info is a nightmare. They took his blood sugar - I’m not sure why- it was really high but he says he’d just want some fudge! He’s back in the morning. He’s to have blood tests in a week and they said his white blood cell would be too high now to do them. Trying not to worry. He’s a very healthy and fit strong person usually.

The antibiotics should clear up the infected sebaceous cysts. They are checking him for diabetes, so they are doing everything right.

nameychangio675 · 27/12/2023 02:30

Thank you, his dad does have type 1. Tbh my mind was wandering to much worse places

OP posts:
mantyzer · 27/12/2023 02:53

Type 2 diabetes is not uncommon in middle aged and older people and skin problems such as this are very common before diagnosis. If it is mild, type 2 can be managed by diet control and losing weight. Try not to panic though.

nameychangio675 · 27/12/2023 03:11

@mantyzer thank you that’s helpful. If it is I honestly don’t know how he could have type two because he’s super fit - plays cricket, does hiit several times a week and runs - healthy diet etc. but I guess maybe we’ll find out and there might be some modifications we need to make

OP posts:
nameychangio675 · 27/12/2023 03:11

What do I know though (nothing)

OP posts:
mantyzer · 27/12/2023 03:27

It does not mean he has type 2 diabetes, simply that it may be which is why they are testing him. He may simply be very run down.
Type 2 diabetes can be brought on by some viruses as well as lifestyle, just mentioning in case that is relevant.

nameychangio675 · 27/12/2023 03:36

@mantyzer thank you
