Merry Christmas everyone.

I’ve just got home from a family meal at a restaurant we’ve been going to for 3 years.

the first time we went my uncle came with us. But sadly he died very young, and unexpectedly a year later.

so the last two christmases have been hard at the restaurant without him.

anyway, my grandmother (his mother) had a bit of a cry at the table today. Seconds later i asked my grandmother to pull a Christmas cracker with me. She won the little prize and when we looked at what this prize was it was a little matchbox with matchsticks in them to make little figures.

my uncle had 100s of these little matchboxes and used to make figures and small buildings with them.

we were all completely stunned. I’ve never seen those in crackers before. There were 17 of us today and lots of double up on prizes (the usual yoyos, paperclips ect) but only one Matchbox that my grandmother got.

gave us all a chill but we’ve taken such comfort from it.

I just wanted to share, as I can’t shake it from my mind.

i hope you have all had a lovely day x

Hope that it brought you, and your grandmother, some comfort. There is more in the world than we will ever understand, and woo or not, it’s lovely that this evokes a memory for you.

I completely agree.

it really made us smile. And the timing was just perfect.

I’ve had lots of crackers (different brands from different places) and I’ve never seen a little matchbox in a cracker.

I’m a strong believer in life after death. Maybe it was a sign that he is ok and was there with you all. 💐

Lorac23 · 25/12/2023 19:54

Despite the naysayers, Christmas is one of those times when the veil between the worlds is just that bit thinner and we're just that bit more likely to get messages from the other side or whatever you'd like to call it. Maybe our guard is down more, maybe we're just more likely to notice. Sounds like your uncle was definitely sending a message of love and reassurance x

We were saying the same.

I’m certain he was with us and it was a sign.

I’ve put the match box on our cabinet, I’ll never throw it away.

I think so too, I can’t describe how beautiful the feeling was. Such comfort x

Oh OP that gave me goosebumps. I definitely believe that when you die it doesn’t just stop - I’m sure we all carry on, just in a different way. Your Uncle was giving you his Christmas wishes.

Fswgkyoye · 25/12/2023 20:36

Aww such a happy sign OP.
About a month after the death of a young relative I was very close to, I had a day where I was crying buckets. My phone tinged and it was a message from relative's phone saying "I Love you"
I work in a very niche area of healthcare, I frequently get my great grandmother's signature scent at work, it's always followed by a particular harrowing or horrific case. I firmly believe she comes to give me the mental fortitude to deal with it and to remind me my dearly departed are always close by.

Absolutely! I couldn’t not share it.

I will never forget it either. It’s brought me such comfort. And on a very special day as well x

Wow! I truly believe that as well. And little signs really do mean the world. Especially when we least expect them.

I'm going to stick my head above the angelswoobollocks parapet and say what a load of bollocks.

How do you think the matches got into the cracker? In the restaurant from some ghost who can mysteriously only teleport cracker gifts as his only way of making himself known to people, or when the cracker was made months ago by a child labourer in China who doesn't even get a day off today?

Everyone on this thread needs to look up Derren Brown and also learn about coincidences, probability and random numbers before you get scammed from being so gullible.

Don't be an arsehole @SisterMichaelsHabit

The OP is bereaved. Anything that gives comfort when you've lost a loved one is a good thing.

We know ghosts don't exist. We know they don't put things in crackers. But sometimes coming across something that comforts you is all you need to keep on going

Wow you’re a delight.

I’m not saying a ghost rocked up and shoved them in there..

it was coincidence, and timings that brought us some comfort for what has a been an horrendous time.

How cruel. No need to comment. This was something that gave OP comfort during a hard time.
No one is being scammed or gullible.

I had a little sign yesterday OP. I always put a special decoration in the shape of a star that has my late grandma's name on, on my tree. It went missing this year and I couldn't put it on first like I normally do. Christmas eve I found it in a random place and i put it at the front of the tree and told youngest DS about her. She LOVED Christmas.

Later on I told my mum and she said she has a star shape tag that has my grandma's writing on. I didn't know that she saved it and gets it out each year to remind her and only took it out just before I told her. Mum said it gave her goosebumps.

No doubt @SisterMichaelsHabit will be along in a minute to shit all over my post as well.

That is beautiful! It’s the small things that really do mean the most. It’s the best form of comfort.

(and ahah! I did laugh out loud, even on Christmas Day there’s the small few who have to be arseholes!)

Very well said. I’m not much of a believer in communication from the other side etc, but I do believe in people accessing and processing their own feelings through events and things around them. It doesn’t really matter if the uncle was “ actually “ involved or not. The point is the presence of the matchbox was able to remind them of him, their love for him, crystallised a moment of thought and focus on him and leaves them a tangible memento of those feelings.
