Had to call the fire brigade out. Smoke alarm kept going off!!

Just as we sat down to eat our lunch the smoke alarm kept going off. We checked everywhere and no smoke or anything. We kept switching it off. It's connected to the electrics. The fire brigade fitted it. It went off six times. We tried to ring the non emergency fire brigade number but it wasn't manned so I bit the bullet and dialled 999. I did stipulate the problem and explained it wasn't a huge emergency but they arrived with the sirens blaring!
Turns out one of the firemen was one of my pupils from school. Wilf and I gave him a big hug. They were very sweet as I was embarrassed and they fitted a new alarm before they left.

Lovely Christmas story 😍

PamelaParis · 25/12/2023 16:39

You called the fire brigade on Christmas day for a faulty smoke alarm? Hmm

OT2023 · 25/12/2023 16:40

Awww how is Wilf? Does he hear the smoke alarms?

If it’s connected to the electrics you can’t switch them off or disconnect them. I don’t have any of these type but they sound a nightmare. I’ve heard of people being kept up all night by them.

I guess the danger is if you do nothing and there’s a fire in the night you risk ignoring the alarm and dying 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thankyou.... Exactly. With an elderly lady and a profoundly deaf person we thought it best...!

If its connected to the electrics there is no way to turn it off, plus the fire brigade still work Christmas day so its not as if she dragged them from their families.

OP my friend who is deaf has a smoke alarm that has an incredibly bright flashing light, it's the kind of light that basically burns into your very soul. It even wakes her up if she is asleep. Might be worth looking into for Wilf.

Wilf has the all singing and dancing smoke alarm at home....

Oh Lottie what a time you are having with things going wrong & breaking down. At least Wilf can see the funny side of it in his photo! Enjoy you Christmas! Xmas Smile Xmas Smile

We couldn't switch it off and we have an elderly person and a deaf person in the house!!

Always such a clear divide on your threads showing who is a longtime MNer and who is a newbie 😂

Will be a funny story for years to come! No need to be embarrassed, better safe than sorry. Merry Christmas!

irisgg7 · 25/12/2023 17:11

My sodding house alarm was going off a week ago, late at night, it wasn't even switched on 🙄 It was too late to do anything, plus I never use it, so I took a cricket bat to the mother board!!

Most satisfying moment ever when it stopped. You can always stop these things..but probably cheaper to get them back to fix it 😂

Elderflower14 · 25/12/2023 17:14

Exactly! 🤣 🤣 🤣

It was probably set off by water vapour, cooking a large meal will often make a house very humid.

AngelAurora · 25/12/2023 17:20

You wasted the fire brigades time in other words?

LakeTiticaca · 25/12/2023 17:20

You did the right thing. There could have been something smouldering quietly getting ready to blow up.
And you got to meet some nice firefighters. What's not to like? 😁

Smoke alarms are in the fire brigade’s remit. Did you miss the bit in the OP where Lottie said the fire brigade fitted it in the first place?

Hellocatshome · 25/12/2023 17:27

AngelAurora · 25/12/2023 17:20

Nope she didn't. The firebrigade will come out to a smoke alarm when there is no obvious cause (burnt toast etc) and it won't stop. That's what they do. If they didn't have any appliances because they were all dealing with a serious incident they wouldn't have sent one. They always come in a fire engine to even non emergencies in case there is an emergency whilst they are out and about.

SanFranciscoCalling · 25/12/2023 17:28

I've missed a Wilf update. Very sensible to call the fire brigade in the circumstances.

If they fire brigade fit them then they have to expect to be called out to fix them when they go wrong

Hamstermayhem · 25/12/2023 18:03

I once had to do something similar-was mortified but the fire brigade were fab and very reassuring that I was not wasting their time.
Lovely to see the picture of Wilf-hope you’re both doing well and have been having a great Christmas 🎄

Elderflower14 · 25/12/2023 18:21

We all sat there and we could hear the sirens in the distance.. My nephews partner said somewhat hopefully that perhaps the sirens were going elsewhere.. Nope they went flying past our house to the bottom of the road. Turned round with a wail of the siren and I then waved them down on the way back!!
