Think I have a kidney infection

Super timing. I am not prone to anything like this, it’s been years since I’ve taken antibiotics. Had a normal morning then went to visit family for brunch and a cuppa, then on the way back I started with a really achy lower back and legs, feeling very chilly, bit of a headache, not feeling sick but I have no appetite, & peeing quite a few times.

I am sinking peppermint tea, waiting for Tabby McTat to come on BBC1 and seeing how I feel…

anyone else struck down with a minor illness on the worst day of the year for it?

You need to call 111 now and get some advice, they might send you to a walk in centre (depending on what is open today) as I'm pretty sure you will need antibiotics if it's a kidney infection. Don't leave it if you have a fever, they can get worse quickly. It sounds like a UTI and they can turn into kidney infections.

Kidney infections are agony, you’d know if you have one. It might be a UTI though. You should be able to get s9me antibiotics from an emergency pharmacist

MrsRetriever · 25/12/2023 14:47

Yes I will be calling 111 very shortly - it’s not debilitating pain but I can’t ignore it & it won’t be any easier tomorrow.

It's a UTI OP l have had them for 20 yrs so am very familiar with the symptoms. Contact 111 asap. It's a horrible thing to deal.with.

MrsRetriever · 26/12/2023 01:59

Thanks @BritishDesiGirl - I ended up going to out of hours GP and tested positive for a UTI, so now I have some antibiotics & hopefully they kick in soon. Just woke to hunt for painkillers as I am still headachy & in a cold sweat, and DS has crawled into my bed and stolen half the duvet.

bloody love the NHS.

Omg OP are you me?? This happened to me Christmas Eve also now on antibiotics, keep drinking loads of water, painkillers for fever and pain. Feet up and rest utis can turn into a nasty kidney infection very quickly. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Tilllly · 26/12/2023 04:19

How're you today @MrsRetriever ?

You stay in bed and drink plenty of water

Teasie123 · 26/12/2023 04:22

Cranberry juice is the best thing for any type of kidney ailments. it'll clear that infection up a lot quicker.

solice84 · 26/12/2023 09:15

I think I have one too
Started yday morning out of no where
I thought I had a uti a week ago but it didn't turn into anything
Now my back / side really hurts
Same happened last Xmas

Joining in the fun. Woke up on Christmas Eve with that classic UTI feeling. Christmas day was agony, woke up in the night with crippling pelvic pain. 111 this morning (visiting family so hundreds of miles away from usual GP, which is closed at any rate). Have an emergency GP appt in 30 minutes where I'm hoping they'll prescribe some good, strong antibiotics. Pain has definitely spread to the kidneys now, I can hardly stand upright.

Solidarity with the rest of you Christmas UTI sufferers, it's so crap. Feel really guilty too BC I don't see family that often (due to the distance) and I've been mostly locked away in the loo or pretty sullen (due to the pain). ☹️

Delpf · 26/12/2023 11:57

And yeah, God bless the NHS and all the call handlers/doctors/nurses/lab techs/pharmacists etc., who are working over the holidays!!

MrsRetriever · 26/12/2023 17:23

Sorry for all those who are feeling rubbish. It’s the quickest I’ve ever got through to 111 though, no time on hold at all. It was quick and easy at the chemist today as well, and luckily there was one open nearby.

I’m on call today @Tilllly so no bed rest but I have had plenty of water and mint tea, and my appetite is back so I’m tucking into the leftovers.
