Does anyone else actually enjoy cooking Christmas dinner?

Because I do - for some bizarre reason I really like it.

Please tell me I'm not a weirdo!

I’ve just cooked a Christmas dinner for 16 so ….

TheaBrandt · 25/12/2023 14:12

It’s THE WORST meal for a large group. Everything needs to be done at the same time. Usually I would do a chilli or lasagne that I can do in advance but a roast and all the trimmings is tough for mass catering. Am Sure there are superwomen on here who would do it backwards - sadly I’m not one.

Always the fucking potatoes aren’t cooked in time and you sit waiting for them while everything else goes cold…

Yes! Why is it always the potatoes?!

But yes I like cooking it cos I get to tuck myself away from everyone else, listen to music and not have to socialise

PickAChew · 25/12/2023 14:27

It's just a fancy roast but I resent it less than everyday cooking. Mostly for the simplicity of the leftovers.

PickAChew · 25/12/2023 14:30

The timings are straightforward. It just means you have a lot of time doing nothing then lots of things finishing at once.

I didn't cook anything else until the turkey was done and thst was still hot in the middle when I ripped the remains apart after we'd finished eating, almost 2 hours after coming out of the oven.

Crooklodge · 25/12/2023 14:33

Absolutely my favourite time of the year making the soup on Christmas. The kids all piss off and leave me in peace and let me sing away to my favourite band, having THE time of my life.

Mountaindhew · 25/12/2023 14:35

I don't mind as I won't cook again for 2-3 days- we will live off leftovers. I've got it down to a fine art too.

Gowlett · 25/12/2023 14:38

Just a Sunday roast here. Sometimes chicken, sometimes turkey.

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/12/2023 14:42

I love doing it, though we don’t have turkey. It’s a roast dinner on steroids, the other bits and bobs are easy enough to incorporate and we don’t eat til 4 so I can enjoy the morning without being in the kitchen. I wonder if that’s why it feels a hassle to some folk - I wouldn’t want to be putting a joint in the oven at 9.00am, so I don’t.

Cincinnatus · 25/12/2023 14:48

I don’t love it nor loathe it. It’s not that hard. But then I only do it for four people. I don’t host anyone on Christmas Day. Fuck that.

muddyford · 25/12/2023 14:52

I don't mind doing it. But we eat at 6.00 so we have a leisurely start, walk dogs, upmarket lunch and then I prepare everything for cooking. Turkey going in in half an hour. I couldn't do it for lunchtime though.

Borth · 25/12/2023 14:55

Yep, I love it. I cater from anywhere from just my brood of 6 up to 25 at the largest. It’s no harder with more people, just a bit more peeling😂. Today had just been my lot so I’ve had a fair bit of down time in between.

GrumpyPanda · 25/12/2023 15:14

I enjoy it too. My sister is hosting this year but I'm cooking - bringing the roast (beef so travels beautifully while resting in foil and wrapped in towels), mash and one veg dish. Sis and family do a couple more side dishes so nobody gets too stressed. I love making it, and also I'm a much better cook than they are so it's more fun eating as well. They do all appreciate good food - would be different if there was no recognition for one's work.

BG2015 · 25/12/2023 15:17

Not really

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 25/12/2023 15:32

I do.

Should probably start soon

Still not hungry after our huge breakfast

Playmeamelody · 25/12/2023 15:33

I love it mainly as I get to nibble as I go, only dh and me this year and we haven’t started cooking it yet, so may change my mind when I’m actually doing it!

DappledThings · 25/12/2023 15:35

Nope, I don't enjoy any cooking. But I do enjoy clearing up. We've just finished. I've despatched everyone to the lounge and I have a podcast on, a good job to do and peace and quiet to do it in. I would pick clearing up over cooking 100% of the time.e.

Char65 · 25/12/2023 15:45

Yes I love it I love cooking for the whole family and cooking in general. In someways I prefer other meals I make from scratch like pies casseroles stews pats dishes and baking as more creative but have always loved cooking

onthefarmwithwellies · 25/12/2023 15:49

I'm in the kitchen cooking and knocking back sherry like water. I'll not care by the time it's served!!

LeggyLegsEleven · 25/12/2023 15:52

I cook somethings and keep them warm - potatoes etc.
It means all I have to do at the end is cook sprouts and heat gravy.
The only stressful thing is getting DH to carve the turkey and to stop him eating it whilst he’s doing it.

DelilahBucket · 25/12/2023 15:53

I say yes, but I also have DH on hand as sous chef and chief clearer upper, and DS as chief dishwasher emptier and filler. I do most of the cooking and prep, there are two things DH is solely in charge of: gravy and cheese sauce for the cauliflower. That and providing the chef with liquid refreshments 😂

IncompleteSenten · 25/12/2023 15:54

I love it. The Christmas prep and everything.
My family just left with a box full of leftovers and I've come to put my feet up. It's been fab.

Imicola · 25/12/2023 15:56

I do. I love hosting and deciding what to cook. Unfortunately most of our family never want to travel to us, so we end up packing the car and travelling 2 hours on Christmas day to a house where noone really likes cooking.
