Does anyone else actually enjoy cooking Christmas dinner?

Because I do - for some bizarre reason I really like it.

Please tell me I'm not a weirdo!

Yes. Feeling very pleased that I did some of the preparation yesterday - Parmesan parsnips, cranberry relish, stuffing, made the crumbs for the bread sauce. Mashed swede was in the freezer and now it's defrosted will just need re-heating. Still have to climbe the sprout mountain, but that's fine. Bird in oven, pudding in slow cooker, all quite chilled here! Hope everyone else is having a good day.

Doublerainbow23 · 25/12/2023 12:42

Me too OP! The first time I remember it being a challenge to figure out logistics of getting everything cooked to be ready at the same time and got in a bit of a flap. But after that it's been lovely, carols in the background and glass of fizz. Apart from peeling the veg there isn't actually any prep apart from putting things in the oven then taking them out so I don't see what the fuss is all about.

margotrose · 25/12/2023 12:43

I do! But we only cook for the two of us and never do a roast at any other time of year so it's a bit of a treat.

Neither one way or the other really . When we had various relatives over I used to worry in case of any arguments but no worries about the dinner - although it always takes longer than expected .

Daffyyellow · 25/12/2023 12:49

Love it! Best meal of the year. Really chilled here, no clock watching as Alexa is in charge of all the reminders, game changer.

SwedishEdith · 25/12/2023 12:53

I've never cooked one and I'm late 50s. I think if I was left alone, and had had the time to prep, I'd enjoy it as well. But there's always been someone else who wants to cook it.

Vicliz24 · 25/12/2023 12:54

I love it and I rarely cook the rest of the year but Christmas dinner is a must

Simonjt · 25/12/2023 12:56

I really enjoy cooking, today I’m making my very first traditional christmas dinner, I’m also making our usual curry and some traditional Swedish bits.

I do - this year will be the first time I’ve not cooked in 50 years.
We’re going to lunch with our son and girlfriend - it’s been very strange not to be peeling, chopping and stressing about timings.
It’ll be lovely , but I do miss being the cook .
Am taking a pinny as have appointed myself washer-up ! 🤣

MissAmbrosia · 25/12/2023 12:57

I love it. Stick Radio 2 on listening to Junior Choice. Sob during Puff the Magic Dragon whilst peeling veg. Open fizz. Phone the family at opportune moments. Not doing anything fancy this year as the oven is broken. Trying to do everything in an air fryer is a bit of a pain.

Needmorelego · 25/12/2023 12:58

I don't enjoy cooking any time. I find it a tedious chore.
Husband is currently in the kitchen cooking something for him and daughter. I think it's beef (I don't like roast dinners).
I am having something frozen I am doing in the microwave and will follow with Christmasy chocs and treats.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/12/2023 13:00

I do Xmas Grin

I've been cooking Christmas Dinner since I was about 14yo , my Mum really CBA with Christmas so anyone who wandered through the kitchen ( family friend used to visit and he got roped in ) was basically The Chef.

If I have the equipment - knives , peeler , pans, roasting tins , then I;m good to go .

I;ve done all the vegetable preparation, DS has chicken ( just him and the cats do ) the rest of us have a Quorn Roast . It's all the sides that are delicious .
I have Yorkshire Pudding batter resting in the fridge but some Aunt Bessies on standby .

Any leftover vegetables get turned into soup .I'll make a loaf in the breadmaker tonight
Boxing Day is home made pizza (breadmaker proves the dough )

YoongiMarryMe · 25/12/2023 13:05

I love cooking! I love going on trip advisor and looking at random countries restaurants and getting recipe ideas. I love shopping for the food. I love eating. Grin I do NOT like cooking on Christmas Day! My present to myself is to get a takeaway. Though people keep posting about turkey and pigs in blankets and I’m drooling. Feed me!

falgelednl · 25/12/2023 13:05

I enjoy it.
I used to run a pub kitchen MANY years ago so we fed many on Christmas Day and then a fabulous buffet for NYE.
These days, with children aged 10, 15 and 17, we make it a family affair.
I oversee everything. DP is in charge of meat and cleaning up along the way. DD1 7 is in charge of stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and timings. DS10 is in charge of vegetables (with DP) although I do the cooking after they’ve peeled and parboiled. DD15 is in charge of the table and desserts (includes crackers, drinks, condiments and any additional things).
DD17 is ASD. DD15 has MH challenges (and may well be ASD). DP is ASD.
my aim is that, once they are adults/leave home, they will continue to do their part for the Christmas meal and we won’t be stuck doing it by ourselves!
I also love the family aspect of Christmas.

blackoverbillsmothers · 25/12/2023 13:12

Never cooked one and I’d hate it. I’d be so stressed if I had to. DH cooks but he’s so laid back it’s still stressful for me. 😂. Wouldn’t care if it was just us. I prefer Boxing Day when we eat out at the pub. x

parrotonmyshoulder · 25/12/2023 13:13

Love it. Grandparents play with the children, me and DH get relaxed time in the kitchen, getting quietly merry.

Honeyroar · 25/12/2023 13:28

I enjoy it. (although I remember the first time I did it I cried!🤣). My husband cooks the turkey and I do everything else. We’re a good team.

Doggymummar · 25/12/2023 13:29

Yes! We are having a fab time cooking turkey beef gammon and all the trimmings it's such a bonding experience

Tintackedsea · 25/12/2023 13:35

I love cooking and I'm not fazed at all by cooking for a crowd but I loathe cooking Christmas dinner. It's my least favourite meal and I don't want to eat anything after all the fuss of it. I'd rather have just about anything else and spend the day relaxing and playing games.

FoxClocks · 25/12/2023 13:36

I do too! Partly because we keep it fairly simple but lots of it, and buy some bits ready made so it just needs heating up. Also my dd is very good and helps out a lot, she insists on doing the roast potatoes.

Floralovesflowers · 25/12/2023 13:43

Absolutely detest the everyday meal planning & cooking & have gotten very lazy about it (& yes dh cooks too)

However, I love cooking Christmas dinner, everyone loves everything about it & I'll make pretty much everything from scratch. Over the years it has been streamlined so whilst time consuming, it's pretty easy to do.

Dishing in about an hour 😋

PlacidPenelope · 25/12/2023 13:53

gano · 25/12/2023 12:06

I do too. I don't understand why so many people get in such a flap over it. My mum uses to have a nervous breakdown, every year, without fail. Obviously, I try my best to make it as nice as possible, but if something goes awry it's hardly the end of the world.

Same here. It's just a roast dinner with extras, I cannot understand all the angst over it. If something goes wrong or is forgotten it is not the end of the bloody world, it is food, cook it, eat it, the end.

NotFastButFurious · 25/12/2023 13:56

I do! My mum hates it too so even if I’m at hers I tend to do most of the cooking of it. Neither of us are hosting this year and it’s been a long day with not a lot to do!!

Scampuss · 25/12/2023 14:03

I love it!

I'm only cooking for the five thousand two, but probably enjoy various permutations of leftovers the most.
