Ah crap, did I mess up the meat?

I put lamb in the slow cooker at 2am with that protective sheet thing still on it. You know the one I mean, the one that soaks up juices. I even. sealed the fucking thing in a pan with it on.

Just went to stir it and found it.

Am I going to poison everyone?

Not having the best christmas to be honest for many reasons so I don’t actually care. Would just be a shame to have to bin it all.

No just get rid and forget it ever happened .

Multipleexclamationmarks · 25/12/2023 09:08

I'm always doing this, just take it off and chuck it. We've not been ill from it.

Boomboom22 · 25/12/2023 09:09

It's totally fine, just put the sheet in the bin. The lamb is fine.

It'll be fine

CommonSenze · 25/12/2023 09:11

A quick google says basically if it still looks ok you might be alright.
if it’s melted or split then throw the meat out
its silica gel and fibres covered in a non toxic coating

What’s That Absorbent Pad in My Meat Packaging (And What Happens if I Cooked It)?

Don't fret—it's there to keep you safe.

Okay. Just worried I have made some sort of chemical stew with what’s in the pad. It’s been cooking for 8 hours.

Don't think the cover thingie will make a bug difference but am mystified how you will get proper lamb anything out of a slow cooker. You don't give any specifics but even stew needs browning beforehand...? Unless you're doing a low-temp roast and planning to give it a proper blast in the oven to finish it up?

FuckingHellAdele · 25/12/2023 09:45

Ah the old meat panty liner error. Made the mistake many a time, no one is dead yet.

On a serious note, anything that comes into direct contact with meat has to be food grade quality, so safe.

I browned it in a pan.

Its a cheap cut, basically lamb stew as my dad with dementia is here in a bit and he can’t chew properly anymore so had make something soft, not that he will eat it anyway but we have to make it look like we are doing something.

It’s a shit show to be honest. I was having a panic attack when I was putting it together last night as a distraction. Got knows how I missed the liner though. Too much stock, it’s pretty shit to be fair.

Can you take the meat out (if it's tender enough) and work on the stock? Reduce it a bit on the hob, add some redcurrant jelly if you have it, or cranberry? Bit of wine etc

Chinhairsoftheworldunite · 25/12/2023 10:13

My 1.2 kg Turkey crown isn’t defrosted - been in fridge since 7pm last night

Is it cheese sandwiches for everyone or can I salvage this?

The lamb is falling apart into flakes. And none of that in the house! It was always going to be pretty lacklustre to be honest.

My dad doesn’t know what’s going on, just sits there staring ahead which is just so upsetting to see, my in laws flounced off yesterday as I pissed them off (I am coeliac, they bought “real” bread with them, despite being asked not to bring any and contaminated the new toaster dh bought me with it so I can’t use it again).

Really didn’t need to mess up with the food though. I just want today over with, trying to keep it upbeat for the two youngest is exhausting me.

Stick it in the bath like Dave and Denise in the Royale Family?

(Don’t do that! 🤣)

I cooked pulled pork all the time with the sheet on for 12 plus hours. I seem to forgot every bloody time

Use cold water to defrost it in the sink or a basin. Defrost out of the fridge next time or put it in the fridge a couple of days beforehand

That sounds tough (not the lamb!). Sorry Flowers

Take it easy- it's one day, the kids will be happy with their stuff. Doesn't need to be a classic Christmas this year.

Chinhairsoftheworldunite · 25/12/2023 14:49

Ah it was Christmas dinner sans Turkey this year at ours🙂
