Uncomfortable festive sleeping arrangements

I thought I would make a support thread for those of us suffering from uncomfortable sleeping arrangements during the festive period. I’ll begin.

Staying at my sisters for two nights and as the youngest (34…) I’ve been designated the inflatable air mattress. I finally got to sleep about midnight. I was awoken around 2am to discover the bed had deflated by around 50%. Luckily it’s a plug in model (fancy!) so I reinflated myself. Unfortunately the same happened again at 4am and 6am.

I’m also 10 weeks pregnant so can’t even drink copious amounts of coffee to keep myself awake today.

The cherry on the cake is DP is having Christmas with his family and is currently fast asleep in a plump king sized bed. Oh how I wish I’d accepted the invitation!

@Devastated999 What's the airbed?! Sounds amazing!

Last year, ILs too soft mattress. Woke at every single movement of each other. Spent Christmas Day with a bad hip of all things - age 33!

This year, my parents have kindly replaced my bed with what appears to be a pile of bricks.

Can't wait to be back home with our normal medium-firm memory foam.

While we're at it, why do our parents all favour enormous clumpy duvets that bunch up in the covers, and pillows with useless annoying flounces?

When I am super-rich, I shall offer choices of mattresses and pillows to all guests.

I'm in my own comfortable bed, and no fucker is sleeping in odd places in my house ever again Grin

We’ve got people sleeping all over the place thanks to a con artist on Airbnb.

DH’s poor cousin is on a camp bed that cannot be comfy (was a DofE thing for one of the kids) in the utility room.

We had to raid the nearest supermarket on Christmas Eve for duvets and pillows!

The younger kids are loving it. We’ve currently got five of them (12, 10, 9, 8 & 8) “camping” in a tent in the playroom with cushions and sleeping bags. The adults are not loving it quite so much.

Despite my entire childhood having to endure freezing temperatures in my DPs house as putting the heating on was "too expensive" they now seem to think living in a sauna 24/7 is fine. Everyone expect them is sweating buckets and suspiciously jumping at the chance to walk the dog with me despite them all normally saying no.

Are you with my parents?!

crumpet · 26/12/2023 20:26

Yep, #duvetknowitschristmas is a lovely Christmas tradition, and raises a lot of money too. Last picture I saw was someone’s bed in a walk in shower. You are not alone!

Next overnight visit to your parents can you fit a good topper into your car plus your own lightweight duvet? That should help with parents' hard mattress/lumpy duvet - unsure if it would help with your in-laws' very soft bed though. When I started staying overnight regularly at my mother's I insisted she replace the mattress which had no substance in it at all and just collapsed onto the base. 🌹

Definitely second everyone who’s said go look at #duvetknowitschristmas on Twitter, which also fundraisers for homeless charities.
It’s heartwarming to see what people will put up with so they can be together. And it’s normal houses, box rooms full of clutter, people with entire families crammed into their former childhood bedroom, beds under desks, between rowing machines, in the garage/loft. Just brilliant.
MIL (despite being very comfortable financially), won’t heat the upstairs rooms ever. Windows must be open at all times so it’s like Christmas in the Arctic. Comfy beds though.

I'm sleeping in a bathroom on a futon mattress, and it's my own house!

Nothing says "Christmas" more than this post Grin

Well, I have just got home and I can't wait for bedtime! My king size bed! My Hypnos mattress! My pillows that are not 20 years old! My cats' litter trays far, far away in the utility room ...
