Streaky bacon over turkey crown?

redcar28 · 24/12/2023 21:47

My dad is insistent that I have to put streaky bacon over the top of my turkey crown to keep it moist and for flavour. I thought it would be okay without! With just plenty of butter & seasoning.

Is he right?

We do bacon over the Turkey

redcar28 · 24/12/2023 21:49

@Eekmystro Sounds daft, but do you take the bacon off at the end?

To eat? Yes. It's crispy and lovely.

I put butter chunks under the skin and streaky bacon on top. I roast it mostly covered in foil so it shouldn't (in theory!) be burnt by the end (take the foil off around 30 mins before the end. We take the bacon off at the end and if it:s not too crispy, we eat it, or it is a little.om the week done side, just slice it off with the turkey.

We do streaky bacon on the crown too.

Never did it in my parents house growing up, but since I've been with DH we've always done it cos his mum always did it.

Always put streaky bacon over the crown and it’s such a treat to eat it all crispy when the turkey has finished cooking. It’s almost like crackling.

Chefs privilege. Private moment in the kitchen for me with the bacon no lead piping

Your dad is right

@ThequalityoftheReps
absolutley!

Strawberryshortcake90 · 24/12/2023 23:27

Yep your dad is right, I take the bacon off about 30 minutes before the turkey crown is done to allow the skin to crisp up. The bacon is delicious.

Growlybear83 · 24/12/2023 23:31

I always used to put streaky bacon over the turkey breast, but can't do that any more since my daughter converted to Islam. I don't think the turkey tastes quite as nice without bacon. It was nice to Chuck in the soup pot too.

DeanElderberry · 25/12/2023 12:31

It enhances the flavour of the juices under the bird for your gravy too.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/12/2023 12:49

Definitely put rashers over the turkey crown. I cut I so that everyone gets an edge of bacon on their turkey. Delicious!

caringcarer · 25/12/2023 13:04

Dad is right.

This is what I do. It always irritates me when people say they don’t like turkey because it’s dry. It isn’t dry if you cook it properly.

Some of the fake bacons are really nice, they don't look quite the same but they're pretty close to the taste

Growlybear83 · 25/12/2023 13:35

I did try using fake bacon a couple of years ago, but not only does my daughter only eat halal food, she will also only eat organic food which makes everything far more complicated. It was challenging to find an organic halal turkey! 😆😆. But she lives overseas and isn't able to come home much so I don't mind making the effort.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/12/2023 13:39

We do

redcar28 · 26/12/2023 08:33

Streaky bacon it is then 😁 will report back today once it's cooked!
